Controller

Executive Overview

Merkle is a fast growing, highly profitable company on track to generate revenue in excess of $220 million in 2008. As a self funded, privately held company with access to capital, we control our own destiny.

Merkle has been recognized by Forrester Research as a leader among enterprise database marketing services providers. Our clients include many of the world's top commercial brands and leading nonprofit organizations. For over thirty years we have provided our clients with quantitative, information-based marketing strategies that create a superior return on investment.

Merkle currently employs over 1,000 people across the country. In June 2008, we moved to a brand new 120,000 square foot headquarters building in Columbia, MD. While we have an audacious goal of reaching $1 Billion in revenue by 2016, we are far more interested in building a great company with great people than simply becoming another large company.

In our performance oriented culture, our accounting function is essential to how we grow the company, measure results and allocate resources. In this high visibility role as Controller, you will report directly to the CFO and manage a staff of 10-13. You will provide leadership for our accounting operations and lead a strong team of existing employees and attracting additional team members as we grow. Your primary responsibilities will include leadership of Financial Reporting (internal and external), General Accounting, Payroll, Accounts Payable, Tax and other areas. You will work directly with our business unit leaders to ensure that our financial systems and processes support them in achieving our targets for growth and profitability. We believe in providing our operating managers with all the tools and information they need to make good decisions. So we’ll expect you to fully understand the business issues, dive into the accounting details, anticipate problems and consistently deliver what’s needed to successfully manage our growth.

Imagine what you could accomplish in a company with sound fundamentals, a trusting and collegial work environment, supported by a strong accounting team, and the resources you need to succeed.

Goals for your first year:

For a successful first year as the Controller, you will:

Learn what drives results for our various business units, how each operates, and how you can help business unit leaders become more successful. Our units operate under several different business models, and the pace of decision making here is surprisingly fast, so this is no simple task.

Lead the development and implementation of efficient accounting processes to handle our rapid organic and acquisition growth.

Assist in the implementation of new Business Information Systems and ERP modules.

Ensure that our financial statements are fully GAAP compliant. Understand and appreciate the inter-relationships between financial reporting and disclosures, accounting practices and the external audit process across our various business units.

We operate in a multi-state tax environment. Coordinate with our outside tax accountants to ensure that tax issues are identified and resolved in a timely manner.

Continually assess processes and controls to improve our productivity and performance and identify and correct deficiencies. Oversee all aspects of the accounting and control functions and ensure that we operate in a highly efficient and effective manner and conform to all external requirements.

Gain the confidence of the Accounting Department. The department will view you as the leader and we will count on you to help them continue to develop as professionals and lead them to superior results.

Essential Experience and Attributes

Experience

Large scale business background: Prior experience in organizations with revenue over $100M is imperative. We need you to anticipate needs as we grow, and be asking the right questions to develop and execute the appropriate business solution.

Managing multiple business models within one company: Our business units function like a hybrid of a professional services firm, a technology firm and a marketing/advertising agency. Your prior experience with these business models is highly desirable.

Working with sophisticated ERP/Accounting Systems and Reporting tools: You will have experience working with and leveraging systems and tools such as Microsoft, Epicor, Lawson, SAP, Business Objects, and FRx.

A Strong Understanding of GAAP and Tax: You will be responsible for our consolidated GAAP financial statements and leading our annual audit. You will have experience with revenue recognition and other accounting issues pertinent to our business.
We’re looking for your ability to adapt to new circumstances, be responsive to the needs of the business, and understand different business models.

Management experience: A successful manager will be hands-on and “in the trenches” who leads with an enthusiastic, high energy work style.

Driving efficient business processes and implementing internal controls: You’ll need proven, demonstrated success.

Deep functional knowledge of day to day financial and accounting management.

Required: CPA, Accounting degree. MBA preferred.

Attributes

Business-driven, business-savvy: You’re forward-looking and identify trends. You’re fluent in languages of business, accounting and technology as you will represent the CFO and the Finance and Accounting function internally and externally.

Manages the details, and understands the big picture: You go beyond knowing what needs to be done, but also understand why it needs to be done. You can instantly spot the error on a large spreadsheet and you know where to dig into the data to understand why; you know when a process needs to be changed and when it should be left alone.

Problem solver: You’re intellectually curious. You dive in without being asked and you work with a sense of urgency. You consistently see clues in the data, understand and anticipate the consequences and take appropriate action.

Seasoned communicator: You share information, work cooperatively at all levels, and manage staff and organization to greatness. You easily earn the trust of people at all levels of the company

Strong work ethic: You possess a high level of energy and enthusiasm. You totally immerse yourself in your work and take pride in a job done exceptionally well.

Results-driven: You’re predisposed to getting the end-result on/before deadline and with exceptional accuracy.

Process-oriented: You know how to figure out a puzzle logically.

Smart: You are excited by the potential of new technology, love to analyze problems from different viewpoints, and genuinely enjoy the challenges of a growing business.

What’s Attractive to the Right Candidate?

We control our own destiny: Merkle is a growing firm in a growing industry. Our status as a profitable private company means that we do not have the short-term pressures of being a public company or the complexities that come with private equity or venture funding. We are financially sound and driven by financial metrics.

You will have huge exposure to our business units: In a typical week you will work with most of the managers in the company. You will be seen as a leader and a driver of business results. Merkle is an energetic and collaborative work environment – your experience and insight will be sought out, considered, valued and respected.

We don’t sit still: Our business is intensely competitive and is constantly evolving. Our new employees are frequently pleased and surprised by how quickly we make decisions and adapt to market conditions.

Merkle’s culture: Our approach is simple – Work Hard. Play Harder. Our company is filled with people who channel their entrepreneurial spirit into their work and push themselves to always do better. We believe in hard work, a fun atmosphere, shared values, and a level of creativity that only comes about when talented people from diverse backgrounds come together and work toward a common goal.

5 Not Unreasonable Qualities I Need in an Accountant (Downtown!)

I need an accountant.

First and foremost, my desired accountant needs to be familiar with Peachtree software. I have neither the time nor the inclination to train someone on HOW to use the software at the same time I’m helping them get familiar with our accounts, processes, and procedures. If you don’t know Peachtree, don’t waste my time.

Second, my desired accountant must have the ability to handle ALL aspects of the job. This means A/P, A/R, general ledger, financial reporting, payroll and cash management. We are a small company, and one person has traditionally borne the responsibility for all these functions. I’d like someone who has been in a similar role, but I’d also be interested in talking to someone who has experience in 75% of the aforementioned aspects – and is ready to rise to the opportunity.

Third, my desired accountant must have a solid employment history. I’m not interested in resume rabbits who jump from one contract job to another every nine months. I’m interested in someone who is willing to make a long-term investment in our organization and this opportunity, rising to meet challenges and becoming a loyal staff member. How will I judge this? By your previous history. Five employers in four years will not interest me. One employer for four or five years will. Our benefits package (see below) is strong and designed to benefit those willing to make the long-term commitment.

Fourth, my desired accountant will be available to start soon. I’m not interested in being your back-up opportunity or the means by which you convince your current employer to give you a raise. I’m more than willing to negotiate and be competitive, but only with serious candidates.

Fifth, my desired candidate will be interested in communicating with the entire management team and the rest of the staff. If you are only interested in burying yourself in the numbers and staying at your desk, move along. Candidates wanting to make a dynamic difference in our business by providing both insight and analysis – please contact me.

Who are we? We are a financial services consulting firm and infomediary with a 20+year history, a stellar reputation in the industry, and plans to expand. We are employee-owned, so you contribution can directly affect your bottom line. We feature health & dental, life/disability insurance, a matched 401k, and profit-sharing, too. Our staff of 40 is young, energetic, and full of enthusiasm. We’re located downtown with an unbeatable view of the White House from our office and within walking distance to the RED, ORANGE, and BLUE Metro lines.

Please send your resume AND a cover letter AND a salary history to the e-mail address below.

Good luck.
