1) We are still accepting exhibit applications from crafters & artists. Would you like to show and sell your art on one Saturday after Thanksgiving (Days still available are Nov. 28, Dec. 5, and Dec. 19)?
If your work is chosen, we will give you a table and space for free. Preference is given to work that includes or celebrates reclaimed materials, and to folks with interactive displays (for example, Deciduous Dave makes walking sticks and juggling pins out of reclaimed lumber and stair posts. He will be giving juggling lessons!).
To submit your work for consideration, send your name, phone number, which Saturdays you are available, and descriptions/photos of your work to Ruthie@CommunityForklift.com. Please submit asap.

THE BASICS
* Submit application and artwork online by December 18, 2009. Online submissions will be open
* The jury will make their selections early February 2010.
* Selected Artwork will be revealed in April 2010. Those not selected will appear online.
* Banner submissions fees are:
– FREE for AIGA Washington, DC members.
– $20.00 per submission, for non-members
– To become a member of AIGA Washington, DC visit http://www.aiga.org/content.cfm/join
* There is no limit to the number of submissions.
* Banner submissions are open to all Washington DC metropolitan residents(District of Columbia, Southern Maryland, and Northern Virginia).
* By providing artwork to The Urban Forest Project the artist is participating in a value exchange for individual public visibility around the project. All participants are recognized by namein relation to their artwork where space allows, in all aspects, over the life of the project.
THE RULES
Since these are going to appear in a public space on city-ownedbanners, the District Department of Transportation in Washington, DC has ultimate approval. There are three rules to follow:
* No promotions of commercial logos, taglines or corporate names.
* No partisan political messages.
* No obscene language or imagery.
Note: Original artwork only. Images used from the internet orscanned from books or magazines may only be used with written permission from the original source. Any permissions or project costsrelated to artwork is the artist’s responsibility.
THE GUIDELINES
* Banner format size: 30” (wide) x 50” (tall) with a 1/2 inch bleed on all four sides of your artwork.
THE PREPARATION OF DIGITAL ARTWORK
* PDF, TIFF or EPS formats only.
* Convert all fonts to outline.
* Important artwork (like type) should be at least 1/2” from the sides and bottomand 4" from the top. You will still see this part of the banner, so besure to extend your artwork to the full bleed.
* Bleed must extend 1/2" beyond the trim size
* Banner may be created at 50% of the final size at 300dpi or full size at 200dpi.
* All color should be specified in CMYK.

In this 6-week session, which started Saturday, we have our model in a long pose (formal dress ) for all sessions. (see photo)
Students have the option of doing a head and shoulders painting, a 3/4 figure, or a full length figure.
I hope that this time frame will allow for several options:
to give you more time to work with the same model
to allow for the occasional absence
perhaps to try different angles of the same face
to paint clothing
Here is the general description of the class.
Description:
This class teaches the fundamentals of painting the head in oil. Beginning with a toned canvas, students will execute a careful drawing and subsequently build up the structure of the head from darks to lights. Emphasis is on understanding the structure of the head and learning to mix colors to create realistic and harmonious flesh tones. The class will begin with a demonstration of the alla prima technique, used by John Singer Sargent and handed down through generations of atelier painters and teachers.
We meet Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Fee for the 6-week session is $288.
