SUMMARY
A nonprofit organization (NPO), located in Downtown DC, seeks a Senior Accountant to join its management team. This NPO is composed of energetic and entrepreneurial executives and staff whose mission is to help governments and their stakeholders tackle climate change issues by fostering consensus-based actions through collaboration and advanced technical assistance.

The Senior Accountant will head up the accounting department and work directly with the President/CEO and Chief Operating Officer on a daily basis to manage the finances of the NPO. Experience in and understanding of nonprofit grants accounting and state and federal government contract accounting is a must.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The Senior Accountant will:
• Monitor accounting transactions using accounting software;
• Record and report day to day transactions and account balance reconciliations;
• Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports;
• Assist with preparing annual budget;
• Monitor and update financial records and controls, as needed;
• Review and adjust journal entries and reconcile general ledger accounts;
• Perform grant accounting work (i.e. compare grant expenses against approved budgets, ensure timely disbursement grant funds, and proper recording and reporting of grant information, etc.);
• Assist with preparation of Federal Form 990/tax return, 1099s, and invoices;
• Experience with upgrading accounting systems a plus; and
• Prepare the schedules for the annual and the federal audits.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting from an accredited four year college or university; Master’s degree a plus;
• 4+ years Grants and/or Government Contracts Accounting experience;
• Experience with cost accounting;
• Superior computer skills, including advanced use of Microsoft Office Excel and accounting databases; experience with Peachtree or similar accounting system required; experience with Solomon or DelTek software a plus;
• Solid knowledge of the budgeting process;
• Proven record of year end closing and audit preparations;
• Goal oriented, energetic and self motivated; and
• Organized, accurate, and punctual.
