You seem to be generalizing a bit re the abilities/ethics of independent marine technicians. I own a mobile service and have the quals, insurance and service literature to handle the work I do on a right first time, on time and on estimate basis.
I am sure there are some hacks out there, but don't include all of us.
PS: My labor rate of $75 hr is about 25% less than what dealers charge.
