Versatile Musician Looking to Jam/light gigging (Columbia Heights)

I'm 24, I play guitar, keys, mandolin and drums (primarily guitar) and was lead singer in a gigging rock band from age 13 to 22. I can do lead or rhythm guitar, though on keys my soloing skills are lacking.

Vocally, I do harmony quite well, and my range (at least when I sang a lot a few years ago) was good enough to perform most Zeppelin songs and other high harmony parts. I can provide recordings if needed.

I still have a lot of recording/performance equipment (including full PA system, Marshall half-stack, recording software, microphones, etc.) and would be willing to set it up in a practice space (which I do not currently have).

I have another career, so I'm not looking to hit it big, but I would enjoy jamming and maybe doing a few gigs a month.

Styles I like include: 60s/70s rock, blues, jazz (would love the opportunity to bone up on jazz licks), bluegrass/old time. I'm also interested in writing and recording original material.

So basically, I'm looking to put music back into my life after a couple of years of absence, and I'm up for most anything musical.

I live a few blocks from Columbia Heights Metro in DC.

Guitarist-singer, bassist, drums: seeking adept musician who can fill the gaps with perhaps guitar, keys, backing vox, and whatever else.

This project is just beginning but builds on bands I've been in for years in California that toured, etc .. but so far, this is just for 'fun.'

There are tons of ads out there for musicians wanted. Some care about gear, some about age, some about genre. I�m not sure I care about anymore except that I care about people who are easy to work with, and care about music.

Influences say a lot I suppose so here�s mine right now it's a mish-mash of radiohead-wilco with Sonic Youth, Sleater-Kinney, Ryan Adams, War � Joshua Tree era U2, Built to Spill, Sugar, Pavement, old old REM, My Morning Jacket, Band of Horses, Deerhoof, Weezer, At the Drive In, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Guided by Voices, the Big Sleep, Very 90�s I suppose.

I�m looking for intelligent people who are interested in art, but aren�t afraid to break a drumstick, bass string, get beer on their amp case. Aren�t going to mind going off setlist at show once in a while, will appreciate the occasional off the wall 80�s cover, and like to keep the tempo uppace for the most part.

For the past couple of years, I've been dabbling in the harmonica as a way to reconnect with music. It's worked--starting from Little Walter and with the help of musically inclined friends, I've listened broadly and with new perspectives on style, structure, and musical history. But with the harp itself, I've only dabbled.

I'm looking for a harmonica teacher to help me develop technical abilities in the instrument while also exploring music. Your particular musical "specialty" isn't so important to me--blues, folk, bluegrass, rock, avant garde is all fine. What's important to me is that my thinking is transferable across genres. I want to jam with my friends as they play Bonnie 'Prince' Billy tunes on the piano, improvise a harp line as I listen to Dylan's "Tombstone Blues," accompany myself on ReBirth RB-388 (my plan for the remainder of the evening), and whatever else. Psychedelic organ w/ harp accompaniment? Let's do it.

Professionally, I'm a political vagabond. I don't earn much but I do travel a lot and your influence will reach places neither of us have heard of. I can pay you modestly, and perhaps bring along a bottle of your favorite, but this wouldn't be principally a money-earning venture for you.

Alternately, if you're in a position similar to mine, I'm open to becoming a co-conspirator.

Also, I'll probably be looking for an apartment before too long (no, I'm not getting kicked out), so if you have extra space and I sound tolerable, hit me up!

I'm a trained singer with plenty of experience in vocal groups and a decent amount of music theory knowledge, with some vocal improv experience. I used to write (good) lyrics and (decent) melodies that never quite made it into songs, because I wasn't disciplined enough to learn to play the guitar beyond some basic chords. What I would LOVE to do is partner with a songwriter and musician or at least a musician who plays the acoustic guitar and/or the piano, who either doesn't much like singing or would just like someone else to sing while he/she accompanies. I can contribute vocals for covers, and/or lyrics and melodies (or collaborations) for original songs. My musical tastes are mostly in the folk-pop-rock genres. All kidding aside, this is a huge deal to me and I am very serious about trying to get this right. Recording has not been a very successful experience in the past and I've been waiting almost twenty years to get some of these songs done right. In preparation for this moment I've been supporting myself solely as a working musician for the past five years, not an easy feat when you are past forty, and that includes 3-5 days a week stuck in the tiny lofts of Potbelly Restaurants singing to the lunchtime masses. If you haven't witnessed this spectacle, just file it under paying your dues. Yes, it has been a "long strange trip" but the time has come to lay my money down and produce a product I can be proud of.

That's where you enter because while I can write and sing, I have very little in the way of production skills(okay, let's say "none"). Somebody else needs to figure out how to take my scattered(eclectic is overused?), elemental(same with "rootsy")acoustic rock songs and put them together in a thematically and sonically joyful manner. I used the term "Boss" earlier on purpose because whomever I hire will be trusted to take complete charge. That doesn't mean I won't use the power of the purse strings, but as musicians go I'm a pretty easy guy to get along with and because I have no hardened preconceptions about how the songs should be produced, I am looking for an artist. Unfortunately Lowell George is dead and I can't afford Mark Knopfler, so that leaves you, which I hope turns out to be a good thing because I have always had good luck on Craigslist.

A couple of caveats before I wrap it up. This is a "last hurrah" if you will for me as a musician, so I'm going balls out on this one. This will not be done in your home studio with a drum machine and a keyboard. No slight on home studios which I realize are sometimes well equipped these days, but unless your studio is your home and large enough to record a full band and the large chorus at my disposal then we need to look elsewhere. I'm willing to pay for the best musicians and the most appropriate recording studio you can find for the project. To that end you need to know your studios and your musicians. I want somebody who can let me know what my options are as we map this thing out. Lastly, I'm not just thinking about doing this; let's do it now. I look forward to hearing from you.

I'd even be amicable to contemporary 60s-ish jazz.

I've been playing for about 15 years (sort of), and have some catchy bass lines. I have pretty good equipment, too.

So, if anyone's interested, I'm not looking for a heavily established band, just some people who play something that would be interested in something like what I've described.

Grounding an old amp???? (Silver Spring)

I have an old solid state Univox amp that isn't grounded (it only has the 2 prong power cord instead of the 3 prong), can anybody tell me how I can fix this so that the amp stops shocking the hell out of me when I'm trying to sing through it? Can I buy an adapter that will correct this or do I have to replace the power cable, and if so how do I do this?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey all. I'm a guitarist with five or so years of experience. I can't play lead, and generally suck. I'm looking for a group of open-minded musicians to surround myself with in a band to help myself get better and, hopefully, write some songs and do some gigs. I have some experience playing in a band and have a couple successful gigs under my belt, but I had to leave the band when I moved to DC.

Really, I'm just looking for a four or five piece band that's good enough to play on stage without totally screwing up... nothing "experimental," nothing ground-breaking. Just for fun and for the rush of playing in front of an audience. Anyone?
