KaBOOM! (kaboom.org) is a DC-based national non-profit with a simple vision: A great place to play within walking distance of every child in America. We provide strong benefits, a fun work atmosphere, and the chance to make children’s lives better.

We’re looking for an experienced online community coordinator who will nurture, manage and act as champion for an online community of users who are working to build neighborhood playgrounds using the planning tools available at kaboom.org.

Ultimately, success in this job will be measured by the number of real-world playgrounds that get built using our tools.

The DIY Community Coordinator (or DIY Community Manager, based on experience) also will represent the needs of playground builders as KaBOOM! expands and improves its online tools, and will help to determine and implement product-development priorities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Seek out and actively recruit potential users for the DIY Planner on kaboom.org. Focus most heavily on attracting leaders who will initiate new projects.

• Facilitate users’ movement through, and successful use of, the DIY Planner and other online tools.

• Identify common obstacles faced by users of the online planning tools and work with our software developers to address them quickly and effectively.

• Act as the public face of KaBOOM! to its DIY community – the grease that keeps it running and the glue that holds it together.

• Help to develop and lead DIY-related webinars.

• Reach out to third-party organizations (online or offline) whose involvement could improve the DIY Planner.

• Help successful users of the DIY Planner to continue engaging with the KaBOOM! community after their projects are complete.

• Work on other online community tasks as required.

• Perform any other duties as required.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree and 2+ years of full-time work experience with a background that includes measurable success in some combination of the following areas:

• Managing an online community;

• Driving participation in social networks;

• Web site project management;

• Online outreach, recruitment or grassroots organizing;

• Leading community-build projects, especially playgrounds.

Candidates also must show:

• Command of HTML/XHTML, CSS and other basic web standards including some Javascript.

• Ability to communicate effectively, both online and off;

• Ability to hit deadlines without sacrificing a fanatical attention to detail;

• Ability to work flexibly in a fast-changing environment;

• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team;

• Willingness to travel an estimated 10% of the time overall, with some heavier concentrations during certain parts of the year;

• Proficiency in the use of databases, e-mail, and general computer applications.

To Apply:

Send your resume to hr@kaboom.org and include a cover letter that tells us (a) your salary requirements; and (b) your favorite piece of playground equipment. Don’t have a favorite piece of playground equipment? This may not be the job for you. EOE, no calls please.
