AppleTree Institute for Education Innovation has established a reputation for excellence in the education of young children in the District of Columbia. Local and national organizations and agencies as well as many families and community members have taken notice of the positive impact our research-driven program has on children’s outcomes and their later academic achievement. AppleTree is presently seeking contracted early childhood assessors for its Winter window of classroom observations.
AppleTree serves three-and four-year olds in the District of Columbia. The school’s mission is to provide young children with the social, emotional and cognitive foundations that will enable them to succeed in school. We believe that all children are capable of attaining high academic standards, but that many start formal schooling lacking the basic skills that are predictive of later academic success. Schools served by AppleTree provide young children with an intensive, engaging, and appropriate early education program that ensures children attain the language, early literacy, and behavioral skills they need to transition successfully into kindergarten.
Position Description:
Contracted observers are needed for our Winter observation window, commencing January 11, 2010 and ending January 29, 2010, Monday through Friday. Assessors will be responsible for conducting classroom observations geared toward improving classroom quality, assisting in professional development and increasing student language involvement. Hours would run over the course of the school day (8:30am - 3:30pm). Assessors must also attend 3 -required- training sessions on December 3rd, December 4th and December 10th at 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM.
The two observational tools that contracted appointees will be trained on include: 1) the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS). The CLASS is an observation instrument developed to assess classroom quality in preschool through third-grade classrooms and 2) the Early Language and Literacy Classroom Observation – Pre-K (ELLCO). The ELLCO is an observational tool designed to evaluate the degree to which five key literacy elements are evident in the classroom.
All individuals who are trained on these instruments must pass a reliability test in order to be officially contracted for the classroom observations.
Observers who demonstrate considerable competency, professionalism and a desire to expand their knowledge of and skills related to early childhood assessment may be invited to receive additional training related to contract appointments extending beyond January 29th, occurring in the Spring of 2010. Additionally, all observers will also be eligible to be contracted for our Spring CLASS/ELLCO observations.
