Horton's Kids, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to provide comprehensive services to some of Washington, DC’s most underprivileged children and their families, including tutoring, mentoring, dental and vision care, food, clothing, and holiday celebrations.

We have children in grades K-12, and many of them are working below grade level. Each child in Horton's Kids receives a specific learning plan customized to their individual academic needs. Tutors help the children meet their learning goals by using our extensive supply of books, interactive games, and math and literacy hands-on materials. At 8:00 pm, everyone walks the kids safely back to the buses and the Horton’s Kids staff takes them home.

We need volunteers to tutor the children in a variety of academic areas on Monday and Tuesday evenings; tutors can choose whichever day works best with their schedule. The programs take place year-round from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill. Volunteer tutors meet two school buses full of Anacostia children at the intersection of Independence and New Jersey Avenues at 6:30 PM to help walk the kids to Rayburn for tutoring. Volunteers can choose between the following levels of commitment:

•Full-time tutor: work one-on-one with the same student each week
•Part-time tutor: partner with another tutor and work out a schedule to assure at least one tutor is present for the child each week
•Floater tutor: come to tutoring whenever possible and serve as a substitute for any child that needs a tutor
