Support the earthquake relief and recovery efforts in Indonesia
December 20, 2008 - January 3, 2009
Volunteer project: A massive 6.3-magnitude or 5.9 Richter scale earthquake struck Yogyakarta and south region of Central Java Province on May 27, 2006. The quake struck just before dawn (05.53 am) about 15 miles (25 kilometers) south-southwest of Yogyakarta, near the volcano Mount Merapi. Many people were sleeping and were entombed in their bedrooms. Estimated about 600,000 locals left homeless, much higher than the official figures and many took refuge in makeshift tent cities. Hospitals have been overwhelmed. Field hospitals have been set up, and people have been treated by health care providers on the streets. At the same time, many people were reluctant to enter hospitals because they feared structural damage caused by aftershocks.
In Kemudo Village 7 were found dead, hundreds were injured, almost 85% of the houses collapsed and the rest were seriously damaged, 19 school buildings collapsed. The main aim of the volunteers in the project is to do some small renovation and construction of local buildings. In the field of education, the volunteers will also have opportunity to teach basic English to students and organise some games and sport activities with local children and adults.
Free time: The participants will enjoy the very warm hospitality of the local villagers and will have opportunity to get along with them by conducting sports and traditional games or competitions. In the free time, it’s good chance for the group to visit one of the great Hindu temples, called Prambanan Temple, or visit Yogyakarta City (an old royal capital) and the Royal Palace.
