We are looking for energetic volunteers to help us distribute the food to our clients. If you have a vehicle, that is great, but we also need people without vehicles to help navigate and assist with the delivery process. It is great to come with a friend as well!

We meet each Saturday morning at a church in East Dupont Circle. You can get the exact location from our website, http://foodforalldc.org or by emailing us.

We begin packing the boxes at 9am, and begin sending the drivers out for delivery around 10:00 am. Most delivery routes take about 2 hours, and they are all within DC proper.

We do not need any sort of time committment aside from the few hours on the Saturday that you plan to participate. The atmosphere is extremely positive and this event has become a gathering place for many service-oriented DC area residents.
We hope to see you soon !!!

Charity project in support of an orphanage in Bulgaria (Volunteer abroad)

"Rodopski pansion" is one of the biggest social establishments of that kind in Bulgaria, providing home and care for more than 140 young people at the ages of 5 to 16. Most of them have grown up in other children's social homes, and, when becoming teenagers, they come to "Rodopski pansion" in Plovdiv. They attend different high schools in the town.

The socially disadvantaged background of most of the children is considered to be the reason for many problems, which they face in school, in their contacts with other people, in their everyday life. Those who have completed 19 years are not subject of social care any more. They have to leave the orphanage and start an independent living. Many of them turn to be unprepared to make this step after spending all their lives up to now in Social care institutions. That's why the interaction with other young people from different countries while working, playing, learning together in the frame of an international volunteer project is essential for their socialization and adaptation.

The volunteers will be engaged with organizing variety of activities like: sports events, gardening, group games, thematic workshops, walks in the city of Plovdiv, visits to different sights and events, etc. for the children and the youngsters in order to optimize their free time during the summer period. Some maintenance and domestic works will be done together with the residents.

Because of the lack of funds and the difficult economic situation of the social establishment, the volunteers are invited to contribute with their creativity, enthusiasm and ideas. They have to know that this is definitely not a touristic or leisure program in which they just have to join in with the orphans. The experience of more than five years proves that even without expensive events, this can be an unforgettable and really rewarding time for the both sides - the volunteers and the youngsters.

The Orphanage is planning a new playground for the kids. If they get support from the sponsors and the construction starts as anticipated, the volunteers will help with the final works, cleaning the site and decoration of the playing equipment.
Volunteer project: The Akhas are part of the Golden Triangle hill-tribe cultures. Like in the neighbouring countries where they also live, they face in Thailand strong difficulties to be recognised and to value their particularities. The AFECT organisation contributes since 1981 to the defence of their rights, youth empowerment, elders support and cultural preservation and study. The volunteers will learn about their culture and problematic situation and contribute to AFECT projects and the daily life of the Akha villages.

The main objective of the project is cultural exchange between the volunteers and the local villagers but the participants of the project will also practically work in the communities doing several kinds of support and development works, like renovation of some community spaces or field works and farming with the villagers. The exact nature of the work will depend of the needs of the village at the moment of the project.

Study theme: The volunteers will learn about the AFECT campaigns and discover the Akha culture, lifestyle, particularities and problematic situation in Thailand from the inside and from Akha people themselves. An introduction to Akha and Thai language is foreseen.

Special requirements: No special Profile is required for this project. Nature lovers, ethnology fans and human rights activists will be particularly interested by this project. A large adaptability is required from the volunteers in any cases for these projects.
Pune may not be a cosmopolitan city as Mumbai is, but it is a pleasant getaway for all those who want to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Pune has a calm atmosphere, non-confronting people, and is certainly much more relaxed and peaceful than Mumbai. If you consider Maharashtra as a Marathi speaking state of India, then Pune can undoubtedly be called its capital, with its glorious past and high concentration of Marathi speaking people. Pune is also an internationally renowned educational center, being home to many institutions of repute like Film and Television Institute of India, Armed Forces Medical College, National Defence Academy and Symbiosis Educational Society.

Several schools in Pune need to be upgraded in terms of renovation. Blackboards, the main medium for communication between a teacher and the pupils need to be put in place in several schools. Imparting education to eager children is an extremely rewarding and fruitful challenge. Schools, which for the past fifty years haven't seen a fresh coat of paint, are being helped along the way. Volunteers will actively involve in sharing knowledge with hungry children. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy goes the saying. Several children haven't seen playground furniture such as slides, jungle gyms, etc. Volunteers will help install these at various playgrounds so that children get to release their bubbling cauldron of pent-up energies.

This project has been organised since 2001 in the reserve called "Monte San Giacomo". This place has a remarkable naturalistic and historical importance, thanks to ancient medieval ruins located under a typical 18th century “Crotto". It is said that this place, called a Nemeton (= holy wood), was a holy place for Celtic people. The Varese district is also known for its beautiful lakes and many different kind of vegetation, such as chestnut, beech trees, and peaty-marshy areas rich of animals.

Volunteers will work on path maintenance and cleaning, and will also be involved in the mushrooms and pumpkin local fair, that will take place on October 5th.
Well, our new book is out [http://www.chestnuthillinstitute.com/books/affairs/], with some amazing endorsements, and I say it is "our" book because I couldn't have done it without you. It's WHEN GOOD PEOPLE HAVE AFFAIRS: INSIDE THE HEARTS AND MINDS OF PEOPLE IN TWO RELATIONSHIPS, and it has all the help you could need if you or your partner or anyone you care about has been having an affair. To do this book I needed your input: your thoughts and experiences, everything you wanted other people to know about what you'd been through. And you came through like champs. And I especially want to thank everyone who came up with a title or subtitle that we used. Your ideas were great!

BTW: I'm not the only one to thank you. Everyone who has been and will be helped by this book will thank you too.
This is Austin Petersen from the Libertarian National Committee. Dick Heller (The man that took on the D.C. ban against handguns and won) is running for a delegate position in the local D.C. government. D.C. residents are now needed IMMEDIATELY to help Heller gain ballot access and it is crucial that we acquire enough volunteers to fill the slates. If you have been looking for more ways to get involved, this is a great way to begin. Never has the time been more perfect in our history for the Libertarians to unite and work together to make our voices heard. If Heller can take on a city and win a Supreme Court Case for our guaranteed 2nd Amendment rights, imagine what else he could do!

Mentor a High School Student:

Do you want to give back to your community but have very little time? For just five hours each month, mentoring is an incredible way to support high school students in your community. Our mentor program pairs a student with a professional adult who can offer support, advice, and guidance during a student’s final years of high school and the critical post-secondary planning process.

Mentoring can improve a student’s attitude towards school, enhance his/her confidence, and afford the invaluable opportunity to interact with a positive role model.

One Saturday morning a month, Thurgood Marshall Academy mentors and students gather to participate in a variety of fun and enriching activities. Past Mentor Day events have included:

•	Ice skating
•	Museum scavenger hunts
•	IMAX movies
•	Bowling
•	College campus visits
Through this project, the volunteers will support the educational development of the children and the youngsters of Sidorejo by supporting the local school and providing different courses (English, hygiene, environmental education, etc).
The volunteers will renovate school bookshelves (painting, renovating), teach English, and promote personal hygiene.

August 10 - August 24, 2008

In Reykjavik you can experience easily the pure energy at the heart of Iceland's capital city - whether from the boiling thermal energy underground, the natural green energy within the city and around it. Think of the qualities of a great city - fun, space, clean air, nature, culture - and Reykjavik has them in spades. It has the features of a modern, forward-looking society which are complemented by a close connection to beautiful nature.
The population of the Reykjavik Capital Area is about 200,000. Reykjavik is spread across a peninsula with a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean on almost all sides. In the summer, you can sit by the harbour at midnight and watch the sun dip slightly below the horizon before it makes its way up again.
The world’s northernmost capital is framed by the majestic Mt. Esja, which keeps a watchful eye on the city, and the blue waters of Faxafloi Bay. On a sunny day, the mystical Snaefellsjokull glacier appears crystal-like on the western horizon, while mountainous moonscapes spread to the southeast.

The volunteers will be hosted by the City of Reykjavik and their tasks are the following: In Reykjavik we have a lot of youngsters who are tagging the houses in the center of the city. We will help the local authorities to clean up those signs and than we will help the youngsters to make their tags or graffiti in places were they are allowed to make their art.
We will do some environmental work in the green areas near to the center of the city.

Study theme: We will have two workshops in this project: Percussion and Photography. The participants will have the chance to learn to play percussions and we will have a professional teacher guiding and teaching the volunteers. We will also have a professional photographer leading the project so participants should bring their cameras to learn how to shoot photos in a better way.
On the 23rd of August, we will join the Cultural night of Reykjavik. We will have the opportunity to perform in the streets that night and also to enjoy this biggest cultural event in Iceland 2008.

It’s a private pristine rain forest, protected under Brazilian federal law. Six hectares of the forest are devoted to permaculture with the aim of creating a model school for local communities. The Reserve belongs to the Atlantic Forest biome, one the world’s richest in biodiversity, of which at present only 8% remains. In 2000 the Atlantic Forest in Bahia was declared by Unesco a Reserve of the Biosphere. In the Janaina Reserve, an international volunteer project is organized in cooperation with a local sustainable development organization, managing the area and also working with some local farmers’ cooperatives in the fair trade net.
The project's participants will be working in various projects of conservation, while having the rare opportunity of living in a pristine forest and having great opportunities of wild life watching.
The main tasks will be: reforestation in some small but critical border areas of the forest, permaculture, anti-fire and anti-hunting watch. In August it will be possible to plant the tree saplings raised in the nursery where the seeds are put in January.
Participants will also be taught all the basic principles of handcrafted chocolate production: from harvesting to fermentation, drying, roasting of beans and finally handwork processing. Participants will also be able to learn some elements of tropical botany and forestry farming.
The project activities will be held from Monday to Friday. Saturday and Sunday participants will be staying in Itacaré.
Itacaré is a beautiful coastal village, the rainforest reach the beaches and there are magnificent waves. Till ten years ago it was only a little fishermen’s village from where cocoa was shipped all around the world. The area was named Costa do Cacao and its capital town Ilheus is the setting of many novels by Jorge Amado.
Language: The official language of the project is English. Portuguese is the only language spoken by local people. Some basic knowledge of Portuguese will be useful, although some representatives of the local host will always be there and they are able to speak some English, Italian and Spanish.
Age range: 21 and over
