Position: Assistant Data Editor, State of the USA
Reports To: Vice President, Content and Creative

Position Responsibilities

The nonprofit, non-partisan State of the USA seeks an experienced data producer to assist in the ongoing development of a new Web site focused on key measures of national progress in health, the economy, education, housing, the environment and other areas of civic concern.
Working with State of the USA’s Editor and its Chief Data Officer, the assistant data editor ensures the timely creation, production and updating of visualizations and other data-driven features.
Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Managing data acquisition from various federal agencies and non-profit data sources;
• Tracking the release of data updates and working with pre-release versions whenever possible;
• Interacting with data sources to get access to details and clarify issues with data sets;
• Recording details about data provenance, characteristics, issues, and metadata so that they can be readily recalled when necessary;
• Writing summaries and data notes for incorporation on the web site;
• Reformatting data sets for inclusion in the State of the USA system;
• Checking others’ work for quality and conformance to standards;
• Forming recommendations for which dimensions of data sets will be used, and which visualizations will display them;
• Generating visualizations;
• Keeping up with state of the art data visualization technologies and exploring new ideas for State of the USA visualizations;
• Working with writers and editors to find data to illustrate specific stories and to create content supporting State of the USA key indicators;

Candidates must be experienced with web technology in general and data visualization technology in particular. Must be comfortable with using Excel spreadsheets. Must work well as part of an inter-disciplinary team of writers, web producers, graphic designers, interns and others. Must be flexible and able to respond quickly to changing priorities.
The ideal candidate will have familiarity with statistical concepts and statistical systems. Experience with common web programming languages like PHP and Javascript a plus.

The State of the USA is a non-profit, non-partisan institution focused on identifying key measures of national performance across a range of issues, including health, education, the economy and the environment. Working with top socio-economic scientists and statisticians, SUSA is combining their best thinking with dynamic storytelling and information technology to create a free and accessible frame of reference for Americans to better assess their country's progress. A new Web site is currently in development.
