Lead Teacher Child Care Center (Arlington, VA)

Little Beginnings Child Development Center, an NAEYC-accredited, non-profit, full-day year-round childcare center in Arlington, Virginia, is interviewing candidates now for full-time employment as a lead teacher in our classroom for infants. We loop teachers with children so this individual will be working with infants and toddlers over a period of three years. We would prefer a candidate with a degree in Early Childhood Education or a closely related field and teaching experience but we will consider applicants who have experience, are enrolled in an ECE degree program and who are interested in a career teaching young children. Please look at our web site for more information about our center: www.littlebeginnings.org

We offer competitive salaries and benefits including health insurance with dental coverage and a pre-tax retirement savings plan. We are open year-round but close for federal holidays and extra days at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Teachers earn two weeks of paid vacation and sick leave in their first years of employment. If you are looking for a child and family centered program where early childhood educators are respected for their work with young children, we would welcome your application.

We use the High/Scope approach as a framework for our program. We rely on the principles of Loving Guidance as developed by Dr. Becky Bailey to create classroom communities, teach problem-solving and encourage children to learn self-discipline. We are committed to the principles of developmentally appropriate practice as defined by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. We are closed for five days during the year for staff development and support teachers' continuing education.

We enroll 60 children between the ages of three months and 5 years of age. We group the children in five classes with three teachers on each teaching team. We "loop" teachers with children in our infant-toddler groups so teachers may remain with the same small group of children for three years. We collaborate with Arlington Public Schools during the school year to enroll three-to-five year old children with disabilities. APS special education teachers team-teach with our staff and classes are fully inclusive.

Little Beginnings is located in a quiet, residential neighborhood near the Clarendon metro stop on the Orange line. We have a large fenced outdoor play area with trees, a gazebo, play equipment, a sand pit and many opportunities for water play. We are housed in the education wing of the Clarendon United Methodist Church, however, we are not church affiliated and do not provide religious instruction.

Please send me your resume and salary history as attached Word documents; both are essential. I look forward to hearing from you and will reply promptly with the next steps in our application process.

Little Beginnings Child Development Center, a non-profit, full-day child care center in Arlington, Virginia is interviewing candidates for two part-time teaching assistant positions available now. This is an excellent position for a student or parent of school-age children - 10-15 hours a week, 11:30 am - 1:30 and 12:30 -3:30 pm, Monday through Friday. These days and hours are not flexible; we need help at these times so our full-time staff can take their lunch breaks and have planning discussions when the children are napping. You will be working with two other well-qualified part-time teachers and with children from three months to five years of age.

Your salary offer will depend on your education in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or Child Development (ECD) and experience working with young children. We expect you to have a CDA or AA in early childhood education or be willing to immediately begin work to gain this credential. Our accreditation depends on each staff member making steady progress towards improved education credentials if they do not already have a BA degree in ECE or ECD. We provide opportunities for professional development to all teachers and assistants whatever their professional qualifications. We will consider qualified part-time employees first for any full-time positions that open up.

Please note that we cannot offer child care to your children as a benefit of employment. We have no space for new students and we have waiting lists for every age group. For more information about our program, please visit our website www.littlebeginnings.org

Our center is metro accessible and we provide free parking on site.

Please send me your resume and salary history if you are interested in working in a high quality, developmentally appropriate, child and family-centered program.

GED Instructor (Washington, DC )

The See Forever Foundation, located in Washington, D.C., is recruiting a teacher to instruct students in English, mathematics, and other general education subjects at its Maya Angelou Academy Transition Center. The Center provides educational and other support services to youth who leave the New Beginnings Youth Center (which is within the District’s secure facility for adjudicated youth). The GED teacher will assist in preparing the young people to reenter their communities, schools, and/or job training programs.

While at the Maya Angelou Academy, students attend small classes and receive individual attention and support to help realize their potential. The Transition Center extends that support to students leaving New Beginnings to facilitate a smooth transition for them back into their communities. All teachers are expected to support the school-wide goals of emphasizing literacy, helping students develop their critical thinking abilities, driving all students toward mastery and understanding, and helping students find their strengths and talents and use them to address weaknesses and overcome fears.

Reporting to the Transition Center’s Director, the incumbent’s responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

Instructing students in English, mathematics, and other subjects as required and ensure basic proficiency;

Assessing individual learning styles and adapting teaching methods to fit;

Creating a classroom environment that features a rich diversity of resources, engages student interest, promotes student leadership and stimulates student learning;

Having thoughtful approaches to teaching concepts and sparking student interest while also imparting essential factual knowledge;

Participating in interdisciplinary team meetings for all students; and

Modeling and contributing to a school culture of hope and high expectations for achievement.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in education or a relevant field

Experience providing GED instruction

Experience working with incarcerated or at-risk youth, preferred

Highly-qualified as stipulated by NCLB in applicant’s core content area

In addition, teacher candidates should possess an unyielding belief that with the appropriate supports, coupled with high expectations, all students can significantly improve their academic skills, and can develop pro-social and culturally normative behaviors that will enable them to succeed at school and beyond. Candidates should also believe that all students have strengths and talents and that good teachers help students find them and use them to address weaknesses or overcome fears.

About See Forever

See Forever opened in 1997, with the goal of creating a small, nurturing high school for students who had not succeeded in traditional schools. We currently run three campuses under the Maya Angelou Public Charter School name. One secondary campus is located in the historic Shaw district at 9th and T Streets NW, and the second one is at 57th and East Capitol Streets NE. The third campus, a middle school, is also located at 57th and East Capitol Streets, NE.

We assumed operation of the Maya Angelou Academy in Laurel, MD during the summer of 2007, and we also operate an affiliated Transition Center in Washington, D.C. Some students attend school in the Transition Center for up to three months.

Nearly all of the students are behind grade level academically, many have special needs, and most have experienced significant trauma at some point in their lives. At the Maya Angelou Academy and the Transition Center, we aim to provide these students with the best education they have ever had.
