We offer in-home math tutoring in the Bethesda/Rockville/Potomac/Gaithersburg area. I am looking to hire an additional tutor immediately as our schedules are full. The hours will start fairly low (<5 per week) but will grow rapidly. This is not a temporary job, I am looking for someone to be with us long-term. Ideal candidate must have:

-College Degree with significant tutoring or teaching experience (minimum 2 years with references)

Minimum five years experience working in community health, especially in the WASH sector.

We collaborate with Arlington Public Schools during the school year to enroll three-to-five year old children with disabilities. APS special education teachers team-teach with our staff and classes are fully inclusive.

We have a large fenced outdoor play area with trees, a gazebo, play equipment, a sand pit and many opportunities for water play. City Gate is a non-sectarian, faith-based community ministry that provides out-of-school programs for approximately 300 children every year throughout Washington, DC. We are expanding our Spanish language immersion parent cooperative preschool to include French language immersion, Spanish-English bilingual and English language preschool for 2-4 year old children, located at Wisconsin Avenue Baptist Church.

City Gate is looking for a Preschool Director, who will provide the kind of leadership, dedication, and ingenuity in order to develop these new programs to their full potential. Ideal candidates will be flexible, creative, and able to excel at a variety of skills including curriculum development, personnel management, communications, fostering positive parent involvement, addressing classroom management issues, and community outreach. Fluent French and/or Spanish language skills are a plus. The See Forever Foundation, located in Washington, D.C., is recruiting a teacher to instruct students in English, mathematics, and other general education subjects at its Maya Angelou Academy Transition Center. The Center provides educational and other support services to youth who leave the New Beginnings Youth Center (which is within the District�s secure facility for adjudicated youth). The GED teacher will assist in preparing the young people to reenter their communities, schools, and/or job training programs.

While at the Maya Angelou Academy, students attend small classes and receive individual attention and support to help realize their potential. The Transition Center extends that support to students leaving New Beginnings to facilitate a smooth transition for them back into their communities. All teachers are expected to support the school-wide goals of emphasizing literacy, helping students develop their critical thinking abilities, driving all students toward mastery and understanding, and helping students find their strengths and talents and use them to address weaknesses and overcome fears.

Reporting to the Transition Center�s Director, the incumbent�s responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

Instructing students in English, mathematics, and other subjects as required and ensure basic proficiency;

Assessing individual learning styles and adapting teaching methods to fit;

Creating a classroom environment that features a rich diversity of resources, engages student interest, promotes student leadership and stimulates student learning;

Having thoughtful approaches to teaching concepts and sparking student interest while also imparting essential factual knowledge;

Participating in interdisciplinary team meetings for all students; and

Modeling and contributing to a school culture of hope and high expectations for achievement.

Qualifications

Bachelor�s degree in education or a relevant field

Experience providing GED instruction

Experience working with incarcerated or at-risk youth, preferred

About See Forever

See Forever opened in 1997, with the goal of creating a small, nurturing high school for students who had not succeeded in traditional schools. We currently run three campuses under the Maya Angelou Public Charter School name. One secondary campus is located in the historic Shaw district at 9th and T Streets NW, and the second one is at 57th and East Capitol Streets NE. The third campus, a middle school, is also located at 57th and East Capitol Streets, NE.

We assumed operation of the Maya Angelou Academy in Laurel, MD during the summer of 2007, and we also operate an affiliated Transition Center in Washington, D.C. Some students attend school in the Transition Center for up to three months.

Nearly all of the students are behind grade level academically, many have special needs, and most have experienced significant trauma at some point in their lives. At the Maya Angelou Academy and the Transition Center, we aim to provide these students with the best education they have ever had.
