A community of Atheists, Freethinkers, Humanists, Rationalists, and Secularists deeply concerned with the preservation of our First Amendment protections against religious tyranny. The VA-MD-DC area is home to one of the largest populations of Atheists in the U.S. Unfortunately, we are scattered among over 20 diverse organizations with little interaction or coordination. Many individual Atheists are unaffiliated with any group and feel isolated. Given the current political climate and the rising tide of rabid christianism, there is a strong need for the non-religious to stand together as a visible community, with a combined voice and a common focus.

One of Shenandoah’s showcase attractions – the rock-walled gorge of Little Devils Stairs – is the not-to-miss highlight of today’s classic circuit hike in the Park’s Northern District. Starting on Rt. 614 on the east side of the Blue Ridge, we’ll climb the boulder-strewn streambed of the “stairs” on the Little Devils Stairs Trail and complete the loop via the Pole Bridge Link, Piney Branch and Hull School Trails. Toward the bottom, long hikers veer off the Piney Branch Trail to add a near-loop on the Piney Ridge and Fork Mtn. Trails.

The scenery-filled trek, for long hikers, begins at U.S. Rt. 30 in Caledonia State Park and follows the AT southbound along Carls Ridge and Snowy Mtn., climaxed by the sterling view from Buzzard Peak near the hike’s terminus. Short hikers join the route at Rocky Mtn. Rd.

The annual early-June display of blooming Mountain Laurel in the Appalachians should be in all its glory on this outing deep in George Washington National Forest. Starting at Van Buren furnace, we’ll ascend the Little North Mtn. Trail (a portion of the Tuscarora) to White Rock Cliff and its dramatic overlook. We’ll then follow the Three Ponds Trail portion over Sugar Knob, and later the Halfmoon Lookout Trail to the German Wilson Trail. Shooting in numbers will eliminate these personal safety risks, especially at odd hours and in remote places where some of the best photographs are to be had!
My vision is to create a free-of-charge informal female amateur photography group in the Northern VA area that will meet routinely on the weekends or holidays for photo shoots. I will establish and maintain a list of highly desirable places to photograph. An email will be sent out to the group once a location has been determined for the next shoot and if at least two or three people respond, then the shoot can take place. All skill levels are welcome!
