I have taught music theory and composition to all ages and levels, from young children to college students to adults. My attitude toward music and teaching is open and inclusive. I believe in enabling my students to find their own voice, and I shape my teaching to match my students' interests - if you want to learn traditional classical harmony, I can teach you that; if you want to write pop songs, I can help you with that; if you want to write avant-garde atonal music, I'll be right there with you. My approach is not about rules, it is not about enforcing any particular school or approach. Rather, it is about discovering what you have to say and helping you to say it as effectively and convincingly as you can. It is about expanding your musical horizons, enabling you to grow in new and unexpected directions.
I have a BA in Music from Harvard University, a Masters in Music Composition from San Francisco Conservatory, six years of experience teaching theory and composition, an active life as a composer writing music for a wide range of ensembles in a variety of styles, and an extensive and varied background as a clarinetist performing classical, contemporary, and klezmer music.
My basic rate is $75/hour, but this is absolutely negotiable for those who truly have limited financial means. I also do not insist on weekly lessons, for some people less frequent meetings work better. My schedule is very flexible. I much prefer to teach out of my apartment which is in southwest DC, near the Waterfront, a 10 minute walk from L'Enfant Plaza Metro; but will consider coming to your home or work, especially if it is relatively close.

Your personal story and its narration is the key. If your scores justify a position in a top 15-30 school then a well done application can get you into a top 15 school. If you are a tier III candidate you can get into a tier II school and so forth.

Irish Social Dancing is a course in which students learn the terminology, steps, movements and traditions of Irish Social Dancing. Irish Social Dancing is an energetic and enjoyable style of dancing that has been popular in Ireland for over 200 years. Irish Social Dancing should not be confused with the individual performance style of dancing known as Irish Step Dancing, as seen in Riverdance. Though there are many similarities between the two Irish Social Dancing focuses on dancing with partners and in groups.
