DESIGN & OFFICE INTERN - Strategic Branding Firm in Herndon, VA (Herndon, VA)

Growing and award-winning branding design firm in Herndon, VA seeks intern who’s willing to tackle just about anything: filing, answering the phone, data entry, and yes... design and production as well. But no, you won’t have to get the rest of us coffee!

You’ll need to be a team player, be calm under pressure, have a great work ethic, and, most importantly, have an outstanding “can do” attitude. Preferably, we’re looking for someone that already knows the Adobe CS3 suite of products for the Mac, most notably InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. And, if you have experience in Dreamweaver or Flash, that would be even better. We’d like someone in the DC/VA/MD area who can work at least 20 hours a week.

In return, you’ll get to work in a relaxed atmosphere with fun, passionate people. Freelancers and outsourcing companies need not respond.

Yakabod, a web software and services company, is located in a beautifully restored facility in Frederick, Maryland's historic district. We’ve experienced steady growth since starting in 2001. We’ve set our hearts on building a great company. Now we’re looking for an experienced and skilled Web Application Designer to work on location at our Frederick office.

Your role will include working as part of our Design Team in our Application Development Group with a mission to make our amazing technology look as good as it works. We're still small, so you'll do a bit of everything from optimizing CSS to implementing design comps, designing a button or two, and writing help instructions when integrating new features.

You must have experience in building dynamic enterprise web-based applications in addition to having a passion for creating the cleanest, most simple user interface designs involving standards-based methods. Three to five years experience in implementing a design vision from image files to a working application in a fast, and-we-mean-fast, paced development environment is preferred. Print experience is a plus. A thing for fonts and icons is a must.

We expect you to have a strong foundation, knowledge and proficiency in:
•CSS and XHTML
•All the latest cross-browser compatibility tricks
•Graphic design concepts
•Typography
•Color theory.

As a designer candidate you must be able to:
•Design and integrate great UI in application development environments
•Demonstrate skills in all the obvious related graphic design software packages
•Demonstrate knowledge regarding User-Centered Design, Smarty, PHP, JavaScript, HTML, XML, AJAX, CSS, and unfortunately IE browser issues
•Submit a few of your work samples with an explanation of why you think they are your best
•Provide and be prepared for a full portfolio review upon request
•Answer this question: “What are your 3 favorite fonts, and why?”
•Forward a link for our review to your online portfolio and/or submit design samples with your resume.

We’ll also expect you to reliably get things done — you’re a self-motivated, entrepreneurial, problem solver who loves to build software that "works the way it ought to". You thrive as part of a team that’s undertaking a bold adventure together. Most important, you resonate with our core values and culture. Experience in an early stage tech firm is desirable, but not required. An active TS/SCI clearance with polygraph is desirable, but not required. If you don’t have a clearance, you must be willing to be submitted for clearance processing that does include a polygraph.
Smith Farm Center is a Washington DC-based nonprofit health, education, and creative arts organization dedicated to serving people facing cancer and other life-threatening illnesses, their caregivers, as well as the medical professionals who support them.

Smith Farm offers opportunities to explore physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and creative resources for coping with serious illness. At the core of our work is the belief that each of us harbors enormous powers of healing within and that there are both new and time-tested techniques to enhance health and well-being even in the midst of crisis. Stress reduction, inner quiet, telling one's story, supportive listening, making art, writing and being part of a community are some of the simple yet profound techniques that often radically change the experience of illness. Our core goal is to help people in the quest for meaning in their lives - to emphasize and enhance the joy of living over the fear of dying.

We hold one-day and week-long retreats, one day programs, creativity workshops, yoga, nutrition/cooking, and arts & healing classes, and operate a healing arts gallery. We also have artists in residence programs at many local hospitals.
