This morning, at a local convenience store, I got my coffee, and headed to the register to pay. At the same time, the newspaper vendoror some publication vendor was there doing his thing. As I was beginning to get rung up, the clerk and the vendor guy engaged in a conversation about the clerk's South Carolina vacation.]]>Wait, let me be totally fair: They were probably already in the conversation, though in a pause at the time it appeared getting me rung would have seemed to most people to be the current task at hand.The clerk, while ringing me up is standing there, looking the vendor guy in the eye, engaging in their most stimulating conversation. While I and the guy behind me must wait, as this conversation is most important. Well, I spoke up. Yes, I did. I had told myself and those around me that I'm not just going to a quiet bystander. When I'm to speak up, I'm going to do just that.I said "Hey come on, I'm in a hurry". OK? I said this as it was clear to me that his conversation appeared to give him license to ignore the customer at hand. Now, you, I and probably the smart doggy next door would know the proper sequence of priority.Well, heaven forbid I should ever speak up again! I mean the clerk would have no such thing, and he said "Man what's wrong with you this morning?" " . . . why are you like that?" "I'm not allowed to talk now?". There was no yelling or abusive speech. Rather normal tones. Ok, now, the vendor's response, as I could tell from the corner of my eye. He just went back to what he was doing, and that was it.The only apology I feel I owe him is for the mistaken impression I may have given him, some time previously, about 'how' I 'am'?See, I'm a regular customer. So, how dare I have spoken up. But seriously, I didn't make any more of it, and I promptly left, after I paid. Seriously, as I've said before, "Customer Service these days sucks." The clerk with his otherwise professional attire, had demonstrated that he's only "show", not "go". It all starts with home-training. Are you home-trained? No? Don't Know? If you don't know, other home-trained people will know, and if they have even the smallest balls, they'll speak up. People skills are just that "skills". You can't just expect to get a job behind a counter somewhere and expect to do whatever the hell you want. I'm pondering contacting the headquarters, which is how disturbed I am over the situation this morning (7/23/08). I was alone this morning, and I was lucky. If I was with certain friends, they'd still be making fun of me, for not 'letting him have it' (meaning not letting him get away without at least a "you're carrying on, totally ignoring the customer", etc.). And those friends would certainly have been right, don't you agree?Should I, at this very moment be feeling like I had left the clerk with a bad, black vs. white impression?Well, I don't and I find the more I practice speaking up in public, the easier it gets, and encourage EVERYONE reading this to do the same, regardless of color and situation. You know when you're right, as I knew, this morning.I welcome your feedback in regards to my discription of this morning's incident, described above. Keep in mind please, that nobody 'got loud'. The verbal transactions were free of verbal abuses, and the tone was kept to normal conversation tone.
