The band has gigged regularly for the last couple of years at places like Clyde's of Chevy Chase and Zodiac Grill in Gaithersburg, as well as private functions, etc. We have a couple of gigs on the calendar at Clyde's the soonest being October 1.

STILL RUNNING YOUR OWN SOUND?

The band is doing well, you're playing out a few times a month. The clubs aren't providing sound. You look at renting a sound system - it costs $200 more than you're making!

How hard can it be to run sound?

You splurge a couple, maybe even three, four grand at Guitar Satan and buy a fairly decent sound system.

You even read the manual, learn how to hook it up, use it during rehearsal, sounds fine. Load it in the family van, take it to your next gig.

Maybe you're a little late, the club manager waits til it's all set up, then says "you can't put that there!", something's not hooked up right, the power blows, your bandmates are putting pressure on, you don't know what's wrong, the gig goes up late, it sounds like crap, you're sweating, stressed, not playing your best...

Call Me!

Trying to play and run sound at the same time is a total PITA. There's no way you can do both well.

Optimizing and running other people's systems is mainly what I do.

In the club/pub circuit, I usually get a call when the unfortunate musician saddled with being the soundperson gets tired of being responsible for the band's sound and PA system, a situation I can sympathize with fully!

What I do:

Turn up early at the venue, check in with the venue management/ staff,
check out stuff like stage space, location for PA equipment, board etc,
check out the power situation, location and safety,
check out snake and cable runs.

When the band arrives,

help load in,
position PA & monitors,
run the snake,
set up mics & stands,
make sure the power distribution for sound & back line is sane & safe,
set up the board & FX rack,
check the sound system is getting signal to PA & monitors,
run sound check with the band.

Run sound during the show.

At the close of the show,

dismantle sound gear,
wrap cables
help load out.

I generally bring along my own Board, FOH FX rack and a few good mics.

I've been a live sound engineer for over 30 years. I have settled in Baltimore after a long time on the road and I'd like to do my thing locally.

La Coterie is currently in need of a drummer to finish out our lineup. We currently have guitar, bass, trumpet and violin, with rotating keyboard and vocal duty. All members come from different musical backgrounds and we all have written songs so we have a diverse set of influences including anything from Archers of Loaf and the Dresden Dolls to Fats Domino and Mozart. At the moment we practice in Rockville and College Park twice a week (currently sunday and wednesday/thursday night), but we'll be moving to a more permanent practice space when we get a drummer.

Currently we have 8-10 songs written and are working on making some rough demo recordings so we can begin playing local gigs in the next couple months. We will also be playing a couple covers (not something we normally do) at a party this saturday, so if you want to check us out we can meet up there or at our practice on sunday.

Hi,

I'm a member of the Raspberry Campaign, an up - and - coming indie pop band; from and around the DC metro area. We currently have 4 members in our group, all who play various instruments, and are between the ages of 23 and 26.

Our sound has various influences in the vein of blues, noise, folk, and rock. While we're working on putting together recorded material (we're finishing up an EP), we've only laid down a few live tracks for the public.

We have also played live before, and like doing so.

We usually practice Sunday's and Monday's, and that usually starts around 7 or so.

We've been looking for a drummer, for quite some time now. Someone who would not just keep a 4/4 rock time signature, but really accent the music, instead of driving it per se. Whether you are that person, I don't know, but imagine Phil Selway or Matt Aviero, from Radiohead and Cold War Kids, and you'll understand what we're thinking of.

Want to jam or start a cover band?

The last band I started began as Tuesday night jams in March 2005. After two years, health issues had two people leave (I know, sounds more rock-n-roll if drug overdoses not health...) so we found replacements. New iteration focused on gigging every other month. Starting in January 2008, we exceeded our gigging goal. Then first baby and promotion killed it June 21, 2008. Starting from scratch again.

I am 44. Live and work from home in Silver Spring off of GA Avenue x 495. Wife, 3 young kids. 90s Alternative is my favorite music (Pearl Jam, STP, ..). But classic rock with some 80s mix is currently what I know best. Would love to find people who would like to mix these genres.

Regarding bass, my strength is I can play any type of rhythm and hold a great groove. From 5/4 of Take 5, to offbeat bass of Red Hot Chili Peppers, to slap bass Spin Doctors, to the groove of Golden Earring�s radar love, to standard 4/4 rock and roll, I�m �in the pocket�, i.e., sitting in the groove of the song. My weakness is I can�t just jam or throw in �chops� � I do covers by learning them from ear and playing them the way they were played.

Regarding vocals, I am a baritone/second tenor -- I can do a great Mick Jagger, and sang 1/3 of the songs in old band. But I can not carry the band as the only vocalist, have to pick and chose songs I can play and sing, so other singers will be needed.

My limits are practicing once a week on Tues, Wed, or Thurs evening, ideally practicing in or near Silver Spring (Sorry, I do not have place to play or PA). If we want to gig, ideal max is gig once ever 6 weeks. I do know two owners of bars where we can play, one in Rockville and one in Bethesda. And probably one in Arlington. Historically, I brought over 30 people per gig.

I have real cool Les Paul -- would love to play a little guitar (2-3 songs).

Sorry for the ramble-fest. My pet peave is Craigslist postings that do not give enough data to know what they desire.

Studio Music Lessons @ Gemstar Pro Studios

With these individual lessons, the student will be guided through a variety of production techniques as the student develops their understanding of Pro Tools (the industry standard software). Through hands-on learning, the student will be encouraged to play instruments, record, edit, and mix. Student will be supplied with their own in-class workstation.

The student should expect to gain a thorough understanding of music production as it relates to becoming a better studio composer. We will learn tricks and techniques to creating, crafting, and refining songs.

$50 per 1 hour lesson, full 20 week course also available

We have found that we have a knack for writing really rocking originals. All we need is a bassist now. Must be able to walk over simple progressions (not jazz or blues progressions) as well as rock.
Background (or lead, perhaps) vocals a plus, but if you can't we still need you.
The bandmembers' ages are around 18. If that makes you uncomfortable don't join.
The material is so good that we expect to be gigging it in a couple of months. All we need is you in the low frequencies.

CD Project Done?!?! Now What? (World)

I've been working in this industry for over 10 years now: I have worked on numerous independant CD projects, toured extensively,was in a 'mock-umentry' entitled Schmevis & have enough love in me to help a band or solo act launch on Itunes to get that extra 'exposure' needed.

THese days to do music right, you have to do it full time and to succeed Devote lots of time, effort & Focus. If you are like me, You've spent months or maybe years writing songs, re-writing, working on your image etc, and Once you've recorded a CD there are still lots of things to think about!!!?
Things like Tour, Radio, Gigs, TV, management ETC...Bottom line: All acts need 'exposure'!!!
