Wood and metal frame construction. The treadmill is motorless. The tension of the treadmill belt is controlled by turning of a knob on the panel that holds the Exercise computer. The treadmill belt is in excellent condition, the walking surface measures 41" x 13 7/8". One can use the treadmill with or without utilizing the swinging arms. The tension on the movement of the arms can be adjusted with a knob at the base of the attachment. You can also increase the resistance by shifting the treadmill to an inclined position
