Hey there!

I am a banjo/guitar/percussion-playing baritone that is trying to get a new project off of the ground. I have been working on a concept for a little while around bluegrass and reggae fusion (think: reggae skanks fusing with mandolin chops; upright bass pulse with a reggae groove now and then; smooth electric banjo rolls playing off of a hand percussionist; fat vocal harmonies). However, I have not found any solid contacts yet to build up the sound and I am looking for collaborators who are interested in the project.

Songwriters and Lyricists are encouraged as I want this to be a highly organic project. I would like the focus to be what I laid out, but I am very open to new paths. I'd like to develop a sound that is rooted in a traditional sound and takes it somewhere that only heavy psychedelics can otherwise go. I'd be interested in folks who have experience with either genre, or their historical roots: old-time appalachian, african drumming, sacred harp, scrape and rake....

You might think that it's crazy, but all rhythms descend from african ones, so it works!

The DeafAids (www.DeafAids.com) is a working Beatles cover band who has been playing the NV/DC/MD area for the last four years or so and is looking for a keyboard player with a great voice to help us take it to the next level. We want to branch out into other British Invasion music (as well as "American Resistance" and other 60s music), which requires a fifth member on keyboards to cover organ & piano as well as strings & brass. It would also help us in covering a number of Beatles tunes that had a "5th Beatle" on the recording. It's a plus if you can play some guitar, bass or harmonica. While we each have a primary instrument, we also have multiple instrument proficiency and spread the load depending on the song & vox. This is a good time in the history of the DeafAids. We want to take it higher, expand our coverage, and get more gigs. A desire to want to help define the band (including a new band name!) & its direction as well as help get gigs will be welcomed. A lack of attitude is essential along with personal responsibility. We're middle-aged guys with demanding life responsibilities (professions, families, church, etc.) and cannot get together every week, so it is critical you know your parts when you come to rehearsal so we can blend the parts together. Most of all, you must want to have fun, taking the music seriously, but not yourself. This is as much about friendship as it is about the music. While we choose not to do this professionally, we believe we should still deliver a professional product to our audiences--and have a lot of fun doing it.

The occasional 8-minute dicso space jam on Miss You has been known to happen. 5-piece, plus sometimes a 3-man horn section with a somewhat New Orleans feel to it (not as much on the Funk tip). All 20s/30s. Would love someone the same. Vocals a big plus. Stand-up bass as well almost too good to be true, but definitely not essential. Laid-back vibe, 1-3 shows a month. Have had to turn down upcoming shows at Rock and Roll Hotel and DC9 because of the empty bassist spot.

I'm looking for a few good musicians to start a band of gypsies/John Mayer like trio. I would like a bassist and a drummer who know how to lay back and groove and get some simple tunes and covers to play some shows. My influences include Derek Trucks, John Mayer, Clapton, BB King, Hendrix, yea yea yea yea. I have a decent amount of connections to get some shows around the area, I could probably get a 10 song set with a few covers and originals in no time. I am 20 years old, have a place in Warrenton with all the equipment needed to practice so you wouldn't have to bring your kit, rig, etc. I would prefer if you were reasonably close to my age, but since most people my age don't know how to groove, I'm definitely willing to make exceptions. I am a college student and I work, but my schedule is flexible and one night a week probably would suffice enough to practice. I am supposed to go to Glen Echo Open Band this Friday, but it is supposed to rain and we can't go on those roads on a rainy night as they aren't lit well. Meanwhile, I have to play in some band that night as it's been a long time since my last musical gig, and I can't play with my normal group this season as their concert was scheduled for exam night, and I am really getting upset about a lack of ability to exercise my talent. I plan to bring my ukulele, harmonica set, and some of my percussion. Every Thursday night is now Open Mic night at Bobby Lew's Saloon, 2006 18th St.(just above U St. on the left)in Adams Morgan. The first several months have gone well in that we've had great players, enthusiastic crowds and most importantly, a happy owner. Please come out and join us. All musicians are welcome, but please note that I will not play pre-recorded backing tracks. All music must be performed live. That's every Thursday from 8pm-12am. Sign up is in the bar any time after 7:30pm. Happy Hour lasts all night long and features $3 domestic bottles and 1 lb. of wings for $4, which can make it a cheap night out for you and your friends (fans?). The owner of the bar, Martin, could not be more personable and friendly; he's an extremely successful "saloon man" with interests in over a dozen bars. I've been playing in bars for over twenty years and our first conversation(3+hrs)was the best I have ever had with a proprietor, and he continues to be a good humored and supportive employer and friend. I mention this only because he'll be doing everything he can to help me make this a successful Open MIC.

To my mind that begins with treating every performer with respect, whatever their skill level. This means that I'll take the time to shoot the shit, introduce you properly as well as do my best to make you sound good. I won't be pulling out my full rig(Martin is being "generous," however...), but I will be running a good pair of 15" EV speakers and have graphic and parametric EQ's and a multi effects unit. I will also do my best to make your participation feel appreciated. One of my favorite ways of showing this is buying you a beer which Martin will be allowing me to do for those who have earned it. By the way, this will be a meritocracy, not a democracy. Those with more experience will be shown the respect they deserve by playing a little longer than the less experienced. This is no different than a headliner playing longer than an opener. Deference will also be shown to those who show up regularly and bring friends out. Most importantly, I'll be looking to create an environment where all will benefit from the experience.

I'd like to broaden the appeal of coming out to Bobby Lew's by opening up the evening to those who just want to sit in. Too many open mics are just a parade of singers with their guitars. Please don't feel that you need to be a self contained act to join in. I'm a singer songwriter on acoustic guitar who knows a ton of songs and whether you play guitar, harmonica, sax, piano, congas, etc. you are always welcome to sit in with me. Extra guitars will be available to those I deem "worthy"(don't worry, my standards are incredibly low). My personal tastes are "retro," as I was brought up on Dylan, Dead, Van Morrison, Stones, Cat Stevens, Paul Simon, Neil Young etc. but my repertoire crosses blues, folk, bluegrass, country and soul as well. I have a new CD out and I'll be looking for players to participate in upcoming gigs. So this could be a good place to meet up. As I get to know people better, I hope to be able to pair up musicians who I think might enjoy playing together. Unfortunately I don't have quite enough room for full drum kits. I also have cranky neighbors to consider, so I'm limiting it to (but encouraging) hand percussion and perhaps a cocktail kit if you have one. Jazz improvisation class for individuals or for small groups. Instruction is intended primarily for woodwind and brass players, although some guitarists may also benefit from the class.

Lessons include rehearsing and playing together over chord progressions of standard tunes and bebop; I demonstrate the chord changes (and chord substitutions) slowly at the piano, then up to tempo, making it easier to hear how the chords move and resolve. The ability to understand chord progressions and music theory will help you considerably in all styles of jazz improvisation.

I provide arpeggios, scales and riffs for you to play, and show you how to vary them to create original melodies. The many expressive possibilities of rhythm and phrasing are also discussed and demonstrated.

I've gigged professionally as a saxophonist and recorded with jazz groups in DC since the 1980's. I've taught a small jazz ensemble at the International School of Music in Bethesda and have a Music Degree and Master's Degree.

My studio is located in south Leesburg, or I can come to your location in Loudoun County.

Everytime I get bashed out the wazoo on here and I try to flag the bashing poster's ad, it never works unless I use the harassment/911 feature under "Help"! Why is that? I know it takes more than one flag by the "community", but how are these guys getting these posted ads flagged off of here all by themselves and so fast too??? The 911 feature does take quite awhile to drop off and that's only if its a personal harassment/hate post.

Now that's my questions. Please advice with intelligence, maturity and knowledgeable facts! That would be so nice for a change, coming from CL!

I have a bassist I'm working with now but he has limited time to devote to the project and I'm looking for someone who can sub for him and possibly replace him. He knows this and is down with it.

URGENT: Band Needed Tomorrow Night for Non-Profit's Fundraiser

Beyond Talent, a non-profit in the District area that helps non-traditional high school graduates transition into college or post-secondary training, will be holding "Evening at the Park Jazz Gala and Silent Auction" at the Josephine Butler Parks Center tomorrow night. The event will be from 7:30 to 10:00 on 15th Street in Malcolm X Park. The band we booked to play has not responded to our recent attempts to contact them, and we must conclude that they may not be able to play. Because we are a small organization, we need play time donated so that all of our proceeds go toward supporting the services that we provide to our students. We were planning on having a jazz band play because we have been advertising this as a jazz gala, but any band that could play a jazz repetoire would be great. We only need background music, so no more than three or four pieces would be necessary.

Hi there. I have a show on December 14 at The Red and The Black Bar in DC (1212 H Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002; www.redandblackbar.com) and I need two artists to perform 30 minute sets each as openers. They can be either solo artists (one voice + one guitar) or a full band.

The style I'm looking for should be similar to my own, which is pop-rock/folk rock/indie rock, or something along those lines.

The show will be promoted regionally and articles detailing the show details will be featured in "On Tap" magazine, The Diamondback Newspaper, and others.

Because this is a low-cover show, opening acts will receive minimal compensation TBD based on performing style. It is not necessary, however, for the opening act to have a large draw. This would be a great opportunity for an up-and-coming local artist to get some additional exposure.
