I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but I felt I must respond....

I am one of "those" people placing wanted ads. My goal was to prevent a dog from even getting as far as the shelters. If fewer go in, then there are fewer who may be euthanized. I applaud and support many rescue organizations who take animals from shelters and find them good homes, but I am sure many are being overwhelmed by the current influx of animals due to the recent economic crisis.

I fully qualify for getting a pet from the shelter or rescue organization. I have no problem paying the fees nor do I have a problem paying a "rehoming" fee. My only goal is to prevent at least one animal being taken to a shelter because the family felt there was no other choice.

Please think carefully before you lump all people into one category. I am willing to bet most of us who have placed wanted ads really do want to help.

This bicycle attachment is a really awesome thing to have if you enjoy being outside and want to enjoy it with your dog.

I purchased this a year ago in hopes that my dog and I would be able to spend the weekends biking together, but after he got sick as a puppy, I didn't have a chance to try it out with him until he was an adult. At that point, he didn't seem to enjoy it :(

We are welcoming a group of 5 artists to come on Tuesday and Wednesday (the 21th and 23th of october 2008) who can paint oil or acrylic on canvases, than another group for the following week (28th and 30th).

It's pretty simple to me. Rehoming fees are designed to discourage those who acquire animals on a whim, only to change their mind and abandon them down the road. You'd think that would be common sense, but we humans sometimes put more value on something we actually paid for, rather than something (or someone) we got for free. Rehoming fees also discourage those with bad intentions toward the animals - bunchers, dog fighters, etc. Of course there are no guarantees, but the simple economics of a small fee (which can, of course, be taken in the form of a check made out to a shelter or rescue group or humane organization, if you're so inclined) makes it significantly less likely to be worth the time and effort for a buncher - little to no profit for them.

The posts here asking for exorbitant fees (like the ones that say they paid $1400, so they want $800) are clearly in violation. When you purchase a car that you don't like, you can turn around and sell it at a loss (due to depreciation), but that's the whole issue - SELLING. Anything more than $200 or so, commensurate with the amount of vetting that has been done, is selling. Your legal right, but not on CL. Just take it elsewhere if your primary concern is recouping your investment. I guess my take on it is that buying an animal is a trade-off - you offer money and in return, you promise to care for that animal for its lifetime. If circumstances make that impossible, then your primary concern should be for the welfare of the animal. Find the best home possible by doing a little work checking out potential adopters, accept a small fee to ensure that the new people are serious, then sit back and thank your lucky stars that your wonderful sweetie has a home and won't be suffering in a shelter and running out of time and dying. That's the reality, so don't delude yourself. If you can find a good, loving home for your pet, that should really be all the reward you need. Take the small fee - maybe even donate the small fee - and know that you were a loving, responsible caretaker to the very end. If you can't/won't do that, then sell your pet to the highest bidder. Just don't do it on CL, or you'll be in violation of the TOU and you'll get flagged.

you just read my mind... so many things to say... so little tolerance for such people...

i'm not an lcc nor i've worked for au pair agencies... but as a former au pair i can tell you all i've done for au pairs who were mistreated by their hosts...

once i drove from southern md in the snow to bring food to a friend of mine in frederick, md... the family left for the weekend packing all they had in the house to eat during the drive. they locked the other car in the garage and took the keys with them, leaving her with no food, no car and they live away from public transportation.

one girl was kicked out of the house because the host mother said she was "prettier than the picture in her profile"... the mother put her stuff out in the driveway and told her to disappear... the LCC was not in office hours so I had to go, pick her up and give her shelter until the lcc answered the phone a couple days later.

another friend of mine was invited to leave the family after she was not able to stop the 10 year old boy from killing himself... the boy locked himself in his room in the 3rd floor of the house, cut the protective screen on the window and jumped from there. and it was her fault right? she was there for less than a week... the boy chased her several times with a knife... i don't think the problem was with her...

one of my friends had to rent a po box since the host parents opened every single mail she got. and they didn't let her get a social security number. they said she was a foreign so she didn't deserve to take money away from the american government... what they forgot is that she was hired BY THEM to work legally FOR THEM and as the american law states she DOES HAVE THE RIGHT for such benefits. who are they to decide who deserves social security? this is ridiculous!!!

i have so many bitter stories about bad families... and i have a lot more about good families too. so, the chance to have a successful experience is in the family's hands. the good au paires are out there waiting for a chance to learn english and to spread love, make sure you deserve her.

what do you think is easier?
refinish a basement and paying a ridiculous amount of money for someone to "watch" your kids while you dedicate all your precious time to work or leave behind all you have built through out your life to chase a dream? leave behind your food, your weather, your family, your friends, your job, your career, your school, your comfort zone, your language... or "make the favor" of letting someone use the dark, molded room in your basement and asking them to care for YOUR children just so you can save money?????

good luck to the au pairs... make sure the family you choose wants to spend time with the kids... or they'll throw the kids on your lap in every single chance they have.

make sure the kids respect the parents before you match with them... or they'll never listen to you and all they do will be your fault.

I have a one year old male guinea pig who needs a home with lots of love and attention. He is brown,white, and tan, and is a bit shy. Unfortunatley, I dont have the time to give him the attention he deserves anymore. And I do feel guilty giving him away, but he deserves better. However, I don't want him to go to a shelter or to a home where he will be used for food. As a guinea pig, for right now, he would do better by himself.
