DON’T JUST BE IRISH ON ST. PATRICK’S DAY. Now, you can be Irish every Friday night while you enjoy a social outlet that lets you combine an enjoyable evening in a relaxing environment with aerobic exercise, good company and an opportunity to learn a bit of Irish Culture. You are invited to come and join us in the fun of Irish Social Dance. All you need to bring is yourself, a sense of humor, and a desire to participate in an enjoyable experience.
Irish Social Dancing is a course in which students learn the terminology, steps, movements and traditions of Irish Social Dancing. Irish Social Dancing represents the traditional folk dancing of Ireland enjoyed in country kitchens, at the cross roads, on threshing day and at the American wakes. Irish Social Dancing is an energetic and enjoyable style of dancing that has been popular in Ireland for over 200 years. Irish Social Dancing should not be confused with the individual performance style of dancing known as Irish Step Dancing, as seen in Riverdance. Though there are many similarities between the two Irish Social Dancing focuses on dancing with partners and in groups.
Irish Social Dancing is divided into two distinct types of dances referred to as Irish Set Dances and Irish Ceili (pronounced Kay Lee) Dances. A Set Dance consists of four couples in a square dancing several "figures" with a pause between each. Irish Set Dances are made up of 3 to 6 individual figures with each figure taking from 3 to 4 minutes to dance. In the case of a 6 figure set dance the complete dance can take from 15 to 20 minutes to dance in its entirety. Irish Ceili Dances are somewhat simpler dances due to fewer movements involved and as the dances progress these movements are repeated multiple times. Ceili Dances are formed in lines, couples facing each other or in circles and they represent some of the oldest dances known in Ireland.
Each class meeting focuses on one or more particular Set or Ceili dance. The classes feature dance explanations and demonstrations of the various dances to be taught. A walk-through of the dance movements and figures is followed by the dancing of the figure to music. Additionally, you will learn elementary Irish dance steps as you participate in dances like the Haymaker's Jig, the Walls of Limerick, the Ballybunion Set, the Sliabh Luachra Set, and the Clare Plain Set.
These classes are free of charge and open to anyone interested in joining at anytime. No partner is necessary and the classes are held each Friday night from 7:30 to 9:00.
