The Human Rights Coordinator will work simultaneously on several issues including: trafficking of Vietnamese abroad, religious freedom in Vietnam, and refugee rights protection, among other issues.
The main functions of this position include: (1) managing an international program to combat labor exploitation and human trafficking; (2) representing BPSOS and the Vietnamese-American voice in national and international settings; (3) advocating for specific human rights solutions by educating key decision makers and influencers; and (4) developing and growing a network of volunteers and donors dedicated to human rights and social justice work.
Founded in 1980, BPSOS is a community-based organization with 14 different locations across the United States and a growing international presence. Its programs serve thousands of refugees and immigrants in the US each year, and its network of Vietnamese-language media reaches some 150,000 Vietnamese American households. The Coalition to Abolish Modern-day Slavery in Asia (CAMSA), of which BPSOS is a co-founder and sponsoring member, is an anti-trafficking coalition operating in Malaysia.
Principal Responsibilities:
Program Management:
• Financial monitoring and programmatic reporting of US government funds, as well as tracking unrestricted spending;
• Staff and volunteer development and support;
• Policies and procedures development; and
• Technical assistance and training support for international partner organizations.
Partnership and Coalition Building:
• Build relationships with local, regional and international organizations doing compatible work, and with foreign embassies.
Advocacy and Education:
• Develop and implement advocacy strategies, including preparing and presenting position papers and briefing notes in advocacy and education efforts on human rights issues;
• Coordinate with the PR & Communications Manager to inform and educate the public about human rights issues and BPSOS’ related work; and
• Represent BPSOS, and coalitions of which BPSOS is a member, to discuss policies affecting Vietnam and Vietnamese individuals around the world.
Volunteer and Donor Development:
• Develop national network of leaders and supporters dedicated to human rights initiatives;
• Build specific campaigns to target human rights abusers; and
• Network with Vietnamese professionals, entrepreneurs, and college students to build a strong community of donors and volunteers.
Requirements:
1. Graduate degree (JD or MA) in foreign policy, international development, human rights, or relevant field;
2. Knowledge of international labor issues and the political landscape of Southeast Asia;
3. Fluency in English and Vietnamese required;
4. Proven organizational skills and ability to multitask;
5. Strong written and oral communication and social networking skills;
6. Team player with demonstrated ability to interact professionally with staff, clients, fund and service providers and to work productively in diverse team settings or independently;
7. Deep commitment to social justice; and
8. Readiness to travel frequently within the US and overseas.
