With more than $16.4 Trillion saved up in retirement assets, boomers are ready to celebrate their age, where “60 is the new 60,” and for many, retirement means a new career. America’s “largest, wealthiest, and most influential group”— baby boomers— are in a search for “vitality.” Mental vitality is being sought with brain training programs, aerobic exercise, healthy diets, and social pursuits. However, at the same time, more than 5 million older Americans have Alzheimer’s Disease and that number is expected to grow as the last of the baby boomers hit their mid 60’s. Renewed efforts are needed to fight this devastating disease, which slowly robs people of their mental lives.
Hence, researchers in the Arch Lab at George Mason University are extending an invitation to healthy individuals aged 40-65 to participate in a 4-year longitudinal study of cognition in mid-life to help with research related to dementia. We ask for your help today so that the future will hold more answers for prevention and control of dementing diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Conducted annually, the testing is scheduled at a time convenient to the volunteer and pays $15/hr (about $45 per 3-hour testing session). We will ask qualified participants to commit for the entire 4-year period, involving one testing sessions each year for 4 years. Your participation helps to promote further research in early diagnosis of dementia so that treatment can begin earlier.
We are particularly interested in people who are settled in the region (no plans to move away) and may have first-degree relatives with Alzheimer Disease (parent or sibling), although that is not a requirement. For more information or to volunteer, call the ARCH Lab at (703) 993-9491, or email at coglab@gmu.edu.
