Youth Soccer Coaches wanted – training available, have fun with kids! (S. Arlington, VA)

The South Arlington Soccer Club, one of the Arlington Soccer Association's neighborhood clubs, is seeking volunteer coaches to help with youth soccer teams in Arlington, VA. Most teams are made up of elementary school children. Coaches work in pairs (teams) to help kids learn about soccer, sportsmanship and teamwork. Having fun often helps, also!

Ideal candidates have prior experience working with kids. Soccer experience is helpful, but not a must. Coaches’ training will be provided for those who are interested. Seasoned footie fanatics are welcome as well.

Practices are usually held weeknights @ 6pm, once or twice a week, in South Arlington. Games are typically on Saturdays some where in Arlington. There are occasional Sunday games for some teams. It helps for coaches if they have access to a car, as few of the facilities are Metro-accessible.

Practices start late August or during the first week of September, and games begin September 13 (or September 20th for the younger players). There are 8 games, so the season ends in early November.

Sound good to you? You can learn more about coaching at SASC’s website:
 http://www.SouthArlingtonSoccer.net

Feel free to email with questions that you have.

If you (or anyone else that you know) are interested in becoming a coach, please contact me (Justin Wilt, SASC Manager) using the website's contact info or by emailing the address tied to this notice.

Thanks!

The Herndon Optimist Youth Cheerleading (HOYC)program needs coaches! We have terrific head and assistant coaches but need more because we are growing! This great program has grown by leaps and bounds due to how fun (word spreads quickly)it is, the winner of two winter championships for the last two years, 2nd place in the Herndon Homecoming parade competition and much much more. You DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE EXPERIENCE! We have plenty of coaches to help you catch up to speed, and the cheers and dance are not hard. The squads practice once or twice a week (depending on your schedule), and have games (1 to 2) on Saturdays (they cheer for the Herndon youth football teams). The squads also perform one half time show at Herndon Highschool and cheer on the sidelines with the varsity squad during 3rd quarter. We have a free camp this week for the kids at Herndon Middle School (from 6-8), you can come and check us out! Practices start the week of August 12th. Please e-mail Michele Randall (Head of Publicity/Head Coach) or go on the website of HOYCcheer and register!! WE NEED YOU!

The Jane Goodall Institute (a non-profit organization) is currently looking for VOLUNTEERS to assist with logging a vast library of raw footage of chimpanzees in the wild. Several projects are planned to be made from this footage, including a national television series, and internet projects (so techies interested in chimps and computers, this could be the one you are waiting for). If you are a film student interested in learning more about television, editing, producing etc, or you are interested in conservation and want to "give back", or just enjoy watching chimps, we could use your help. After you've proven your worth and become familiar with the material by logging footage, you may be asked to assist with other areas of production, such as editing, writing, and development. We ask that volunteers commit at least 10 hours a week. Time slots for volunteers are Monday through Friday from 9am-2pm and from 2pm-7pm. If you are interested and available during those times and can commit, please respond with “JGI VOLUNTEER” in the subject.

I am a 30 year old male who recently pledged to volunteer 500 hours to my community. I have found a few volunteer opportunities but I'm always looking for more.

I prefer to work directly with the community but will consider all requests. I have only two stipulations:

1. The volunteer work must benefit the community in some way. Good examples of this can include walks for cancer or taking care of animals. I can't work events that are not for a charitable cause of some sort.

2. I can't be asked to pay for my own training or to buy a ton of supplies. I can use my car for transportation (within reason) but I won't spend hundreds of dollars to pay for training.

Please don't let these stipulations prevent you from contacting me. I will reply to all emails.

To learn more about my work, please visit my blog at http://www.mooticulation.com

You can save animals like the kittens pictured below by becoming a foster. Fosters are like way stations between high kill shelters and forever homes. We need fosters so that we can save cats and dogs before they are euthanized at the shelters, so that they have more time to find a permanent family.

Currently the shelters are so completely overrun with kittens and puppies they are putting animals down as soon as they walk in the front door! If you or someone you know can spare an extra bathroom or bedroom for these innocent lives please consider fostering a companion animal. If you are interested in becoming a foster, please reply to this post.

Thanks for saving a life!

Looking for a volunteer opportunity that really makes a difference in someone's life? The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia is seeking new volunteer tutors to help area adults learn to speak, understand, read, and write English. The ESOL Tutoring Program works with non-English speakers (who are likely illiterate in their native language) who want to work on speaking, understanding, reading and writing English. Currently on a waiting list to be matched with tutors, these adult students are eager to improve their English literacy skills by working one-to-one with a trained volunteer.

Each tutor is trained, matched with a student, and encouraged to meet weekly for an hour and a half at a location convenient to both the volunteer and the student. The Literacy Council provides intensive tutor training at their Falls Church office prior to starting an assignment (there is a $35 fee to cover the costs of training materials). The next three-day training will take place in Falls Church on August 9, August 16, and August 23 (all Saturdays) at 9:30 am-3:30 pm. Absolutely no teaching experience or knowledge of foreign languages is required. All that's needed is your willingness to promote adult literacy in the community and serve others!

Could this be you? Please contact Belle Penaranda at 703-237-0866 x111 or volunteers@lcnv.org to sign up for the next round of tutor trainings in August or to find out more. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Can you imagine if you were unable to read this website, a street sign, directions on a bottle of medicine, or even a note from your child's teacher? Have you ever wanted to make a real difference in the life of an area adult? By volunteering with the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia, you can change the life of adults who want to develop the basic reading, writing, and English speaking skills necessary to be successful members of our communities.

Last year, the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia succeeded in educating over 1,800 adult students, who are striving to better their lives. We were only able to help this many people because we have so many hardworking, dedicated volunteers. Last year, over 1,200 volunteers donated over 31,000 hours of service, which averages to 25 volunteer hours per day!

You can help by volunteering to tutor an adult one-to-one, teach in an ESOL classroom, act as a class aide, work in our computer lab, help out in our office, or volunteer for our special events. You can make a difference in an individual's prospects, a family's opportunities, and a community's future.

To find out more, come to one of our volunteer orientations taking place this summer. Our next session is scheduled for next Monday, July 28th at 7-8 pm in Falls Church.

Please sign up by contacting Belle at volunteers@lcnv.org or 703-237-0866 x111. You can also visit our website at www.lcnv.org.

Try Out High-Performance Electric Bicycles (Dulles, VA)

High technology start-up company located in Dulles, VA, invites volunteers to test ride the next generation of electric bicycles. After two years of Research & Development, we have developed a state-of-the-art electric bicycle that sets new standards in performance, reliability, quality, and safety. We are preparing to launch this bicycle in the U.S. and are looking to the Craigslist Community for first impressions and feedback on our product.

Our bicycles combine elegance with technology to provide the most impressive riding experience available. They are powered by our own 1000 watt brushless permanent magnet motor with state-of-the-art microprocessors and direct torque control and our own state-of-the-art battery pack – both mounted in the hub of the wheels. Depending on terrain and other factors, they will achieve ranges of 20+ miles in electric-only mode and top speeds of 25 mph. You can ride in pedal or electric modes, or any combination. They are very safe and of the highest quality. All you need to know is how to ride a traditional bike.

We are offering test rides to the general public for the first time to collect feedback on style, performance, and riding experience. These test rides will take less than 30 minutes and you will be asked to complete short surveys as you see and then ride the bikes. We are not able to compensate you for your time, but we are sure you will enjoy it immensely – an incomparable experience.

If you are interested, please respond to this post for more information and to schedule a test ride.

Developing a network of natural caves into an eco-tourist site
September 13 - September 28, 2008
October 4 - October 19, 2008

Due to the lack of activities and tourist infrastructure, the young generations often leave the countryside to go to the big cities or the capital. Most of the District offices try to stimulate the development of eco-tourism in their region when potentially interesting spots can be found, to give the youth the chance to stay in their region of origin. It’s the case of the Phattalung district and the head of the Klon La village, in cooperation with the local eco-tourism club.

Among the beauties surrounding the village, we can find a network of wonderful natural caves lying in a beautiful but fragile nature. It is known and visited by few locals only. The partners involved want to develop information about it, build infrastructures to sensitize the population and visitors about environmental protection and structure a trekking circuit. They count on the volunteers to support the initiative.

In the first project, the volunteers will trace the path connecting the major caves together and work on the infrastructures of the starting point.
The second group will create information panels and signs, build garbage bins in natural material to keep the site clean, and will also give few English language lessons to the stakeholders of the eco-club.
The third project will continue to work on the information related to the path and caves, create descriptive brochures in several languages and draw maps of each of the caves.

Study theme: The volunteers will learn about the environmental specificity of the region and how the site was used by the local population through the ages.

Special requirements: Nature lovers will enjoy this project especially. The volunteers will sometimes need to work physically hard.

Hi,

I need your help! I'm a new kid's poet writing my very fist book and I need to know which are my best poems. I would love to just email you some of them. Then you would just show your kid so they can 'grade' them - and then you email them back to me. That's it! It should be fun for them too. :)

This would really help me a lot. Thanks.

The 4Paws Rescue Team is allowed to keep foster cats at the Petco in Alexandria to increase their chances of finding a loving home. Petco volunteers are asked to commit to one evening or morning each week to care for 2-4 cats. Volunteers spend about 30 minutes cleaning the cages, giving the cats fresh food and water, scoop the litter, and then provide lots of love and cuddling to the cats. All supplies are at the facility. The best part is letting the kitties out to play and get some exercise! We have lots of cat toys, so you can play with them, leashes to walk them through the store, etc.

Due to Petco's store policy, store volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. This volunteer opportunity requires someone who is reliable and can stick to a schedule. This is a great opportunity for those of you that aren’t allowed to have pets in their homes and a great service to our cats that need all the socializing, love and exercise they can get.

We currently in need of Tuesday AM volunteers (AM is anytime before 10:00 am) and Wednesday PM volunteers, but volunteers for other shifts are encouraged to apply as well.

If you are interested, please contact us at info@fourpaws.org or by phone at 703-715-6369. Thank you for making a difference!

Wondering what is the best way to spend your summer months?
Join the fight against corruption and earn credits for school!

If you are looking to spend the summer vacation doing something exciting, meaningful, and socially transforming, 5th Pillar is proud to offer you an opportunity to be part of a dynamic team of volunteers who are fighting corruption in India. In return for your work, we offer you credits!

How are we?
5th Pillar is an international, non-profit organization, whose mission is solely focused on fighting corruption in India, a menacing problem that has posed numerous problems for effective functioning of the public sector agencies of the country. We are registered with the IRS as 501(c)(3) organization in the United States, making us eligible to collect tax-exempt donations. India, the world’s largest democracy, already has four pillars that signify a vibrant democracy – the legislature, executive, judiciary and the media. There is now an additional, 5th Pillar: the citizens of the Nation. We encourage you to visit our website www.5thpillar.org to learn more about our organization and the exciting programs/projects carried out by our volunteers in India and the United States.

What we do?
As the nation with 1.2 billion people ramps up its developmental activities aimed at improving the citizens’ quality of life, it is experiencing unforeseen difficulties in reforming its public sector. The role of non-governmental agencies such as 5th Pillar has become vital in this critical stage of development as they actively educate the public about their Right to Information (RTI) and strengthen the role of citizenry by involving people in all aspects of governance. In 2005, India enacted the landmark Right to Information Act which states that ‘Democracy requires an informed citizenry and transparency of information which are vital to its functioning and also to contain corruption and to hold Governments and their instrumentalities accountable to the governed.’ Please visit www.rti.gov.in to learn more about this landmark ruling that has transformed the institutions of governance to effectively serve the citizenry. True to its words, the RTI Act has already yielded several success stories from all over India over the past few years. 5th Pillar is actively taking up RTI as its weapon in the fight against corruption and
