She's a 7 year old female German Shepherd/Husky mix (ID#A324955) and she's a great example of how more mature dogs can be fabulous adoptive pets. During the month of November, the shelter is participating in Adopt-A-Senior-Pet month by waiving the adoption and microchip fees for pets 7 and older (please see the details on the websites, links below). Why are older pets so great? Well, they're past the puppy stage, more settled and calm, have established personalities, and truly understand that they're getting another chance to be loved! Duke is a super sweet boy waiting at the Prince George's Animal Managememnt shelter after losing his home and family. Duke is a very cute 11 year old male Doberman Pinscher mix (ID#A119478). Duke has the added issue of a sinus tumor and no one is sure if it's operable or not. Despite all of this, Dukie (as we've come to call him) is incredibly sweet, gentle and caring!!! We would love to board your animals with us while you're away! We're a married couple without kids that's been occationally pet sitting for 2 years now and we absolutely love it! We both have experience with dogs and cats and administrating medicine and first aid for them. I also have experience with rehabilitating of dogs that suffer from injuries and/or obesity.

We live in an apartment complex in Alexandria, right next to the Holmes run dog park. You pretty much set our schedule with your pet's routines, but we prefer taking the dogs out once every two hours and then for an hour of play in the dog park in the afternoon/early evening. We'll be home with your pet 24/7 and we never cage them unless they're used to it and the cage is a comfort zone for your pet. But you'll have to bring toys, food and crate yourself.

We charge $20/day for dogs and $10/day for cats. References available upon request.

I have a male chihuahua in which will be a year old next month up for adoption. He is upd on shots however his rabies is due again in Feb 2010 which is only a few months away. He is good with other dogs/cats as well as children. He does alot better with children 6 and up. He is still working house training but if you take him out periodically he will not have accidents. I bought him from a woman who rescues dogs for 200.00 I am only asking for 150.00 rehoming fee. He had a really rough couple of months in this life as he was abused by his previous owners but for the past 5 months he has been in a caring loving home with lots of attention so I would like for him to remain in that type of home. We are moving to DC and can't bring our cat Sadie to the house we are renting. I have run out of rescue and shelter options, which I cannot bear anyway. Sadie is older but healthy. She is sweet but VERY skittish. She spends most of her day under the bed or in the closet, and joins us on the bed at night. She gets only hard food and just grazes, so you don't have to worry about a feeding schedule. She is as low-maintenance as an indoor cat can be. She is afraid of our 1-year-old but doesn't seem to mind older children anymore than she minds anyone else who knows not to chase her. Again, though, she is skittish and probably won't do a whole lot of ball-chasing or playing.

In a year or two, we will most likely have a house she can move back into, if you want this to be temporary. We are happy to provide you with initial supplies and a generous pet store credit.

DC is an 8 year old full breed classic tabby Maine Coon looking for a wonderful home. Healthy and up to date on his shots, DC has many, many more years to live (healthy and happy cats usually live 15-20 years!). He is a very sweet fellow that needs to gain your trust before he will let you into his heart. He must have been loved at some point in his life because his foster mom says he will ask for attention and even curl up in bed with her at night. Unfortunately, probable neglect and the hurt he feels from having been abandoned have marred his spirit. Free to a good home. We have two wonderful, docile and loving cats that we must find a home for due to our children's allergies. We have a girl tiger tabby and a boy swirl tabby - see pictures below. They are 8 1/2 years old and have been with us since they were 6 weeks. Their shots are up to date, they have been neutered, but still have their claws. They are not brother and sister and could be separated. They are very tolerant of children, but would not like to go into a home with other animals. They are very well behaved and are very sweet. Our children will miss them greatly.

We ask that we be allowed to see where they will be living and to receive updates via email every once in awhile to make sure they are adjusting okay. We consider them family members and it breaks our hearts to have to place them elsewhere.

OJ and Marley are a charismatic father-son pair. Both are very sweet and loving; it's a wonder that they don't have a home yet. Marley, the son, about 7 months old, is a sweetheart, friendly and loving with everyone. Still a young kitten, he is very playful, and loves to wrestle with his dad, OJ, about a year and a half old.
It's hard not to fall in love with OJ at first glance. He's a heart-breaker with a gorgeous furry face and longing eyes. This big ham doles out his love to everybody, and is a perfect snuggle-bug on blistery fall nights :) In fact, his foster dad says that OJ sometimes thinks that he is a scarf, curling up warmly around his neck, and contentedly purring. Both of these boys are up-to-date on their shots, neutered, and healthy. Bailey is a cockapoo -- mostly cocker spaniel features. He's almost 4 years old with all shots & comes with a year of heartworm and Frontline meds. He's sweet and loving, crate-trained, but has one bad habit I cannot live with -- he refuses to urinate outside. I don't know if it's because he lives with a much bigger dog or if he's stressed from his recent move from my parents to my house (they had to go to nursing home and I rescued two of their dogs). No matter how fast I get him outside from the crate, he "saves" it to go on my floors as soon as we come inside. He needs more attention than I can provide.

If you have a loving home where he can be the center of your universe, he may grow to respect your floors and start doing his business outside. I will consider any reasonable option -- new home, rescue organization, non-lethal shelter.

Full grown, over 10 years old. Was told he was a ball python when he was gotten over 10 years ago (he was only about 8 inches then). Has since grown significantly and is either on the top end of adult ball pythons or low end of burmese pythons. He's about 6 feet in length and now looks a little more like a burmese, but acts like a ball (especially likes to ball himself up on his little heat rock). Loves to take baths/soak in warm water, curious and adventurous, good eater. Will rehome just him for $50 or him and his huge enclosure for $150.

If you are posting free pets for rehoming, but not limited to free, please be aware bunchers prowl this site for freebies. They seek kittens to sell to labs for experiments and love to grab the litter, small animals for big snake food and sadly even other dogs to use as bait to train fighting dogs. Pure breds will be grabbed for resale if the price is right.

Never allow anyone to see your pets without first obtaining full name, address and home phone and check and note ID on meeting. Let them know up front that you require neighbour/vet references and a quality home check. It is amazing how many disappear after these basic request. A contract is always a good idea that prohibits resale and is available on the interrnet.

Never post a Must Go Today, Will Drop Off or Meet Half Way if you have any compassion whatsoever for the well being of the pet. Beware Wanted Postings without investigation, especially those who will not pay a token rehoming. Pets are expensive to keep and costs hundreds while young and thousands when old. The universities are surrounded by hundreds of dumped cats/kittens at the end of the college year who ravish the wildlife and are starving. Donating any amount to a spay and neuter clinic is a wonderful way to control the misery of unwanted animals.

There are many wonderful adopters out there and they will always welcome your questions and concerns. Bunchers, on the other hand, seek only to profit in any way they can from your pets rehomeing while promising a forever home that they have no intentions of providing.

I have two 2 year old cats in need of a temporary home for a month. We are in the process of moving into a new place and need to have the cats out of our current residence by the end of the year. Both cats are gray tabbies. They are altered males but still have their claws. They are brothers and have never been apart. We would prefer a home looking to "test" having cats before deciding to have their own. I'm not sure how my cats would react to other animals in the home. The most surefire way to get information or to adopt is to go check out the animals in person and talk to the staff. Email is NOT the way to get information about a specific pet! Shelter hours are Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10-4, Wednesdays from 11:30-7:30, closed Sundays, Thursdays and holidays. If you think you might be applying to adopt a pet the day you visit, you might want to bring along ID, something that verifies your address (like electric, gas, water bill, etc.) and either a copy of your property tax bill (if you own your home) or a signed lease or signed landlord letter (if you rent) to show that you are able to have a dog or cat. This will help speed the process for you. Please be aware that the adoption process requires at least two visits, one to meet and apply and one to pick up the pet. I am a volunteer without further information about these dogs. Please contact the shelter for more information about each dog's current availability. Make sure to write down the dog�s ID number (the one starting with �A�) as there are often other dogs there by the same name. This will also help staff find information more quickly. They have so many animals looking for homes and more come in all the time. You can check the shelter websites for the full listings of pets available, though sometimes they are not quite up to date. Go to the shelter in person to check on pets you�ve seen and also to see who�s there but not up on the website yet--not to mention that they are just much prettier in person! You do NOT need to be a Prince George�s County resident to adopt!

When they are particularly busy, especially on Saturday, the shelter staff may not be able to answer your calls. The main phone number is: 301-780-7200 (or dial 301-780-7201 for the front desk). The most surefire way to get information or to adopt is to go check out the animals in person and talk to the staff. Email is NOT the way to get information about a specific pet! Shelter hours are Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10-4, Wednesdays from 11:30-7:30, closed Sundays, Thursdays and holidays. If you think you might be applying to adopt a pet the day you visit, you might want to bring along ID, something that verifies your address (like electric, gas, water bill, etc.) and either a copy of your property tax bill (if you own your home) or a signed lease or signed landlord letter (if you rent) to show that you are able to have a dog or cat. This will help speed the process for you. Please be aware that the adoption process requires at least two visits, one to meet and apply and one to pick up the pet. During the process they will want you to bring the rest of the family who will be living with the new pet in to meet the pet, too, and if adopting a dog, also any existing dog you have to see how they interact. Please make sure that your current dog is up to date on their DHLPP and rabies vaccinations before visiting the shelter. If you live at a distance, you might want to consider bringing everyone in for the first visit.

If for some reason the pet is too young or is ill/injured at the time of adoption and surgery must be delayed, you pay the higher license fee which is refunded with proof of spay/neuter)
