*** Craigslist readers. A charity activity for a great cause ***

We are reaching out to young men to combat negative messages in the media,
and promote respect for community, respect for law and most of all, respect for
women. If you are the parent or mentor of a college-aged young man who is
entrepreneurial and willing to stand for something, please read on.

We are communicating positive messages to our youth and raising money for
charity through a beautiful and powerful 2010 calendar. Our goal is to get one
to every young man who needs to live a better life before January 1st, 2010, and
we are using other young men to reach these young men.

The young men we need must be:
-	Respectful, well-spoken and neatly dressed;
-	Hard-working and ethical;
-	Creative and good communicators;
-	Experienced with fundraisers and/or sales.

Calendars sell for ten dollars apiece. One dollar of each sale goes
to support a local women’s charity, and the young person earns
four dollars for every calendar they sell.

If you know a young man willing to make a little money spreading a
positive message for a good cause, or an organization interested in
fundraising, contact me ASAP through Craigslist. Include your
contact information, a short bio of the young man, and best times to
reach you.

Thank you!

I really hate the "rushing" of Christmas but some things do have to get organized and going. That said...

Please considering joining a group of compassionate folks in the metro area who come together to create and distribute care packages on Christmas Eve to those living on the DC streets. We are not an official charity so no deductions are available, just a serious case of the warm fuzzies. Every year the group grows and we are able to create more and better packages. Each person contributes only what they can afford, no more, no less. Whatver it is, we and the homeless are extremely grateful.

Each person gets a care package with sandwiches, chips, fruit, dessert and a beverage. To that we add non-perishable food items, toiletries, gloves, hats and socks. We also collect and distribute gently used clothing, coats, shoes and blankets. Everyone brings their contributions to the meetup location where we put together the goodies and then take them to places where the homeless are known to congregate for distribution. It is amazing how much they appreciate these simple items. And it is always touching to chat with them and hear their stories. Most of these people have just fallen through the cracks, Many are veterans.

We'd love to have you join us. You really will be glad you did. Please contact me for more information or to sign up.

Thank you!
DC Metro Young Professionals Kiwanis Club (DCYP) is DC’s premier young professionals service organization. We have a simple mission: to serve the community while building strong networks and having fun.

DCYP is dedicated to creating a fun volunteer atmosphere where you can meet other young professionals while making a difference in your community. We offer a wide variety of volunteering opportunities that benefit all aspects of the DC community including projects with children, the elderly, the homeless, and the environment. Every month, DCYP holds a social or happy hour and 3-4 hands-on service projects. The events are always convenient – being both metro-accessible and held after normal work hours and on weekends. By volunteering with DCYP Kiwanis, you’ll be working with an established global service organization and enjoy many Kiwanis benefits, including working with youth-led service groups at local schools, having access to leadership programs, and being covered with liability insurance at our projects.
This year the hurricane Jimena has lashed the city of Guaymas leaving an important level of rain. 2009 is the year when it rained the most (in the last 50 years) and this caused an important damage to the population of Guaymas and to the city. The hurricane affected people of all backgrounds, leaving a lot of people in the middle of nowhere since they lost everything they had. Everything was affected, public buildings, leisure areas, houses, schools, there was no place that was not affected.
This international volunteer project is organized in order to help in the reconstruction of the city of Guaymas with the support of motivated volunteers. There are many things to be done since there were several areas seriously affected. We need help to clean beaches, to rebuild sportive spaces, to clean up parks and community spaces, to fix roads, to help in rural communities by giving health workshops.
After the hurricane, the children affected don’t have a place to continue their studies, they lost everything they had for their education: material, furniture, the roof collapsed and the walls were damaged because of the water and humidity. For that reason, at this first stage, the goal of the project is renovating and reconstructing two schools damaged by the Jimena Hurricane, so the children affected can return to their educative activities as soon as possible and in a clean and healthy environment, appropriate for their development and with the support of the international volunteers. This project will benefit 25 families for the first school and 180 families for the second school.
Volunteers will help with the reconstruction of the two schools affected. They will help with reconstruction activities such as painting walls, reforestation, and cleaning the schools. They will contribute to renovate these structures through scratching and painting walls, and will also do some artistic work such as painting murals on the walls of the schools with the help of local volunteers with landscapes and thematic appropriate for the children. The volunteers will also help planting trees and reforesting the affected area, making and putting signals and signs.
Age range: 18 and over
Location: Morelia is a beautiful historic city, and capital of the state of Michoacán. Founded almost 500 years ago, the city has a wonderful central zone with buildings dating back to the time of the Spanish conquest as well as all the more modern attributes (shops, bars, cafés, etc). The city's population is over 1 million and the climate is moderately warm, with daytime temperatures ranging from 20-35ş C. Morelia is well connected to a variety of great places to visit, such as Pátzcuaro, and the ancient Purépecha capital Tzintzunzan.

For more details visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-mexico.htm or give us a call: 617-502-0400 (US); 604-628-7400 (Canada)

For volunteer opportunities in other countries click here: www.cadip.org

If you are looking for a way to reach out to those we help, this is an excellent way to contribute . Your volunteers hours will benefit our ministry the entire year 2010!

The dates we are in need of volunteers are December 18 through December 23 from Noon-10:00 p.m. If you are able to fill any of these days and time slots, please email me asap. I will be providing the volunteers with a gift at the end of the week for your gracious contributions. Thanks you in advance for your time. We will also provide a letter on our letterhead if you need the hours documented.

Hello friends,

I have posted my appeal before and here I go again, hoping for a good Samaritan to save me out there. I am badly in need in need of a kidney transplant having been on dialysis for 12 years now! Thank God, I have been in relatively good health but my body has started showing signs of wear & tear after all these years of dialysis 3 days a week for 4 hours each. My blood type is B+;I can saved by people with the following blood type....B+, O+, AB+ and O. Organ donation is no small fit and I know that this is a long shot but I also know that there are some exceptional altruist people out there.

Thank you so much for reading and I hope to hear from you!!

Children’s Law Center’s Adopt-a-Family Holiday Gift Drive

What? 2009 Adopt-a-Family Holiday Gift Drive
Where? Children’s Law Center (CLC)
616 H Street, NW, Suite 300, WDC, 20001
Who? Volunteer Santas
When? Starting Today through December 12, 2009

Instead of wandering the malls, in search of something for the man or woman who has everything – adopt a child in their honor! Or get together with your office and adopt a family or two! Many of our teens are super-easy to shop for – they’d like to pick out their own things, and would love a gift card or two from Target or Macy’s.

Children’s Law Center is the largest legal services organization in the District of Columbia and the only one that provides comprehensive legal representation specifically on behalf of children.

Over 700 of Children’s Law Center’s clients join our toy drive – children hoping someone will bring them a gift to open this holiday season. Our clients come from the poorest families in Washington. Some are abused or abandoned, some live in foster care or group homes, with no family or others to help them.

Some of our clients have never had a "real Christmas."

By becoming an Adopt-a-Family Volunteer Santa, you can give them a happy holiday . . . and show them the true spirit of the season.
Santa’s job is to make children’s wishes come true. Our Santas:
1. Buy two items from each child's wishlist
2. Shop for one full outfit of clothes (including shoes) for each child
3. Provide a holiday meal by purchasing one grocery or Target gift card
4. Support the Children's Law Center with a donation. Even $10 or $25 will help us help your adopted child year ‘round.

Once you sign up, you'll receive a letter with detailed information about your "adopted" children, as well as their sizes and wishlists. Then, once you finished shopping, just schedule a time to drop off gifts at CLC’s office near the Chinatown Arch between Dec 5th & Dec 12th.

To sign up to be "Santa,” or for more information, visit our new website at www.childrenslawcenter.org or email Alison King, the Head Elf, at aking@childrenslawcenter.org.

May we all have a great holiday season (once it gets here!) and together through the Adopt-a-Family Holiday Gift Drive we’ll help hundreds of children have a happy holiday too!

February 6 - February 20, 2010

The Pandan village is located in Rembang regency. The word ‘Pandan’ itself means such kind of leaf which smells good and it can also be used to make a plaited mat.The village provides natural scenery and is far away from polution. This is a pilot project in an elementary school in Rembang regency intended to give some contributions to the educational program in the school and influence positively the develpment of the village, while promoting international solidarity and intercultural encounters. In this context, a team of international volunteers is invited to take part both in renovating the area and in educational activities.
The project will be in Pandan Elementary School with around 100 students and 10 local teachers. The volunteers will help in the renovation and painting of the local school. The educational activities with the children will involve mainly teaching English and basic hygiene practices like cleaning hands, cutting nails, etc.
Study theme: The volunteers will be introduced to the Indonesian culture and customs in general, with a special focus on the Javanese particularities.
Leisure time: During the free time, the volunteers may visit Goa Akbar (Big Cave) and Goa Maharani (Maharani Cave). Near these caves, there is a tourist site called Wisata Bahari Lamongan (the site lies along the beach and is completed with some interesting games, performances and a swimming pool).

The long term goal of the project is to prepare youth to make positive contributions to their future and society through the values of understanding, helping, contributing tolerance, and respectful coexistence. These goals are achieved through education, awareness, youth empowerment and international volunteer projects.
The volunteers will work in different villages in Bethlehem like Eish Al-Ghurab, Dar Salah, Bustan Qaraqa. Eish Al-Ghurab was an Israeli military base. After the Israeli soldiers left the village two and a half years ago, the municipality took the place and now they are trying to carry out different projects there. They started to build a kindergarten, a parking, youth houses, gardens, a hospital, etc. The volunteers will help the municipality of Bethlehem in achieving the projects they’re working on. The volunteers will work in this area along with the people from the municipality, taking up different tasks every day, such as painting, farming, cleaning, etc.
The volunteer project will be running at Christmas time in Bethlehem, the best place to celebrate Christmas in. The volunteers will have the opportunity to celebrate Christmas with the Palestinians, sharing their celebration and solidarity.
Location: Bethlehem is considered a central hub of Palestinian cultural and tourism industries. The city has significant value for Christians as it is considered the birthplace of Jesus of Nazareth according to the Gospels. Bethlehem is also home to one of the largest Palestinian Christian communities in the Middle East. In addition, Bethlehem has three Palestinian Refugee Camps (Dhisha, Al-Azza and Aaida). The construction of the Israeli apartheid wall has had a severely negative impact on Bethlehem politically, socially, and economically. Volunteers have cooperated with a large number of schools, orphanages, institutions for special education and the local authorities to develop projects that are meaningful for the development of this rural town.
The international volunteer projects will focus on rural development, environmental protection and children. The volunteers will spread awareness about environmental protection and solid waste management to schoolchildren. They will also be involved in activities such as creative education and teaching basic English and Math through games, art and songs with the children from the local schools, including disabled kids (physically and/or mentally). The work might include some physical work for the renovation and betterment of the schools (painting, building a playground, etc.).

Proceeds from events, like TASTE OF THE STARS, allow us to provide ongoing support through the course of illness and injury – before, during, and after medical treatment. Our programs are a unique blend of technology-driven tools and fun-filled special events. Each program is designed to distract children from their pain, help them better understand and manage their illness, and connect families with others facing similar challenges.
WE ARE STILL IN NEED OF VOLUNTEERS TO HELP WITH OUR LIVE AUCTION! This is one of the most exciting parts of the gala and we would be delighted if you could join us!

Since 1999 the ex-Convent San Giorgio, a Volunteering Permanent Centre, has hosted hundreds of volunteers in different occasions. The Convent is situated in the region of Abruzzo, centre of Italy, about 150 km away from Rome. It has been fully restored by the local institution Mountain Community and furnished following as much as possible the "static free" standards.
The project aims to bring new economic, tourist and especially cultural and spiritual movements in a quite isolated area. It deals with sustainable living, no waste, recycling and clever use of energies.
As every year international volunteer groups will spend some days at the ex Convento San Giorgio: a good chance to meet people from all over the world, to know a bit of Italian culture, getting in touch with permaculture and sustainable living; all this while staying in a Convent of the XVII century and discovering the beautiful Park of Sirente–Velino.
This is a special project in which international volunteers will help to collect olives in the field. The field is about 45 minutes away from the Convent (by car). During this period volunteers will be spending the day in the field. Work can be hard for some who are not used to it.
January 27 - February 12, 2010

The program for protecting the Marine Turtles is run since 1996 together with the Michoacan University and the local people of Colola Beach. This year again the international volunteers will work with the people of Colola village to protect the sea turtles. There are two kinds of turtles that arrive on the beach, the Negra (Black Turtle) and the Golfina (Olive Riddle Turtle). The people involved in the project help by collecting eggs, burying them in the turtle camp, taking care of the baby turtles and doing some work collecting statistical information.
In this frame, a group of international volunteers will be involved in the project as members of the staff, which means that the volunteers will be very involved in the project and the work.
The goal of this project is to protect the turtles and to help run the conservation activities of the turtle protection program, promoting international cooperation and solidarity.
The main work consists in collecting turtle eggs, burying them again in a secure place, and transporting the baby turtles safely to the sea. This will be carried out at night since the turtles do not get out of the ocean during the day (because of their natural predators, it is safer for the turtles go out of the ocean in the dark). Together with the people from Colola Village, the volunteers will seek for the turtles and take care of the eggs and the baby turtles. Local people, who are very friendly, work with the group and explain them what to do.
Very motivated volunteers who really want to get involved in the work for protection of the turtles are needed for this project.
There are also some extra activities to be done with the local people in order to help improve the town such as setting names to the streets of the town or helping to arrange a multi-use playground for the children, and maybe some cleaning work, but this depends on the volunteers' initiative. The people of the town are very open to participate in other activities that the group of volunteers can propose, so any ideas will be welcome.
Language: The official language of the project is English. Some Spanish would be appreciated.
Location: Colola is a small town located on the Michoacan State coast, between Maruata and La Placita towns. It's a remote place that offers an excellent opportunity to be close to nature, on a virgin beach, with no tourism around. The closest city is Tecoman at 200 kilometers, but other villages such as La Placita that are closer (45 minutes by bus) can offer Internet connection.

For more details, please visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-mexico.htm or give us a call: 617-502-0400 (US0; 604-628-7400 (Canada)

This project is part of CADIP's International Volunteer Program: www.cadip.org/workcamps.htm

Here’s what’s happening…

-->	The Department of Exercise Science at the George Washington University Medical Center is doing a study to learn more about what families do together, and we need your help.

Here’s what we want to find out…

-->	What does your family do together? We are interested in everything from reading, to watching TV, to boating on the Potomac, to sky diving, to baking cookies…
-->	When? Where? How long are you doing it?

Here’s what you need to do…

-->	Call or e-mail us to have the study explained and to sign up
-->	Meet with us to get set up for recording your family activities. (We will come to you.)
--> Wear an activity monitor for 4 days and complete a simple family activity diary for each of the 4 days.
--> Return the activity monitor and family activity diary.

It’s easy… It’s like wearing a watch on your belt and writing down what you do as a family

Vietnam Friendship Village is a treatment/care centre located in the western outskirts of Hanoi Capital, which was opened in 1993 to treat children and veterans who suffer from the effects of Agent Orange (a chemical used by the American army during Vietnam-US War). The children, whose fathers or grandfathers were exposed (causing chromosomal damage) or who were contaminated from their mother’s milk, suffer from a range of difficult conditions. While staying in Vietnam Friendship Village, children and veterans are nourished and are provided with free medical care. The children, who may stay there for several years, receive not only basic education, but also some forms of job training.
The Organic Gardening Project was launched in 2004 with the goal of creating islands of a harmonious approach to agriculture within areas of environmental and human devastation - increasing awareness of the consequences of war and, at the same time, demonstrating positive strategies for healing and living. At this moment, the farm is providing about 60% of the village’s consumption of vegetable. It is expected that it will cover all the need and there are products left for sale to raise funds for the village.
Volunteers will help with clearing the site, preparing soil, weeding, planting vegetables and fruit trees, cleaning a fish pond and redecorating the flowers in the garden. Additional activities may include planting trees, moving bricks for construction, collecting garbage and playing with the children or exchanging with local volunteers or farmers.
In the project from January 25 to February 6, 2010, the volunteers will focus on preparing Tet New Year Festival for the children in the Village. The work then includes redecorating the houses and making of Chung Cake – a traditional cake for this holiday in Vietnam.

The Maryland Psychiatric Research Center, which is affiliated with the University of Maryland School of Medicine, is seeking research participants, ages 15-65. If you suffer from Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, or Bipolar Disorder with psychosis, you could be eligible for the study. However, you need to have at least one biological first-degree family member (mother, father, siblings or children) to participate the study. They will do the same testing as you.

Family members do not have to suffer from mental health symptoms to participate. The overall goal of this research is to improve our understanding about the biological causes of these illnesses so that we can develop better treatments to improve and eventually restore the lives of patients who suffer with them.

Participants should not have a serious medical or neurological illness. They also must not be currently abusing drugs or have an extensive history of drug use. All eligible participants will undergo a clinical interview and several lab tests. The lab tests include a urine screen, blood sample, eye movement assessments, cognitive assessment, EEG, and an MRI.

We are located in Catonsville, Maryland. Transportation can be provided if needed. All participants will be compensated for their time.
Lunar New Year festival for orphans in Saigon
February 1 - February 11, 2010

TET Festival is Vietnamese traditional New Year Holiday (following Lunar Calendar) which usually falls into mid January – mid February. This is the time for family reunion and visits to friends and relatives. Like the Christmas and New Year in western countries, people here prepare a lot for this holiday, from renovating their houses, making cakes and a lot of food and drinks. However, in the orphanages, children do not have enough to prepare for their holiday. Most of them stay in the orphanage or centers over the Tet, only some of them go back to their home villages. Thus, there is need to prepare something for those children, so they still have good time and enjoy such big holidays.
In Ho Chi Minh City area, an international workcamp will be set up to prepare Tet holidays in Ky Quang Orphanage and Chua La Orphanage.
Volunteers will help renovating the houses, cleaning the site and making Chung Cake (traditional cake for children in Tet).

The Thinking Lab in the Yale Psychology Department is seeking adults in the D.C. area, ages 18 and over, to participate in a short online survey. You will be asked to answer questions about interventions.

All procedures are done solely for research purposes. During this experimental session you will be asked to fill out a form indicating your gender, ethnicity, and race. Participants are asked to complete this form by the National Institute of Health to ensure that laboratories are employing fair participant recruiting practices. The form allows the option not to provide this information. Choosing this option will in no way affect your participation and you will still receive full compensation. For more information, please contact Rachel at thinkinglab@yale.edu.

You will be entered in a lottery to win a $20 gift certificate to amazon.com sponsored by the Thinking Lab at Yale University. Your odds of winning are 1 in 50, as one name will be picked per 50 participants. There are no restrictions to winning; you may decide to withdraw from the study at any point and you will still be entered into the lottery.
Guitars not Guns (GnG) is a tax exempt 501 (c) 3 children’s charity; we are not anti-gun; we are anti-gun violence. Nationally we have been serving at-risk and underprivileged youth since 2000. We are a community based organization that provides these youth a positive alternative to the self-destructive behaviors of substance abuse, truancy, crime, and gangs.
Donate your old guitar or the one you don't use.
You don’t have to be a musician to volunteer. Visit our web site www.gngnca.org and click on the “How to Help” tab to learn how your skills and interests could help us make a difference.

We could really use your help…

We are looking for volunteers to help us spread the word about our ADOPTABLES. Fewer cats are being adopted and unfortunately this means fewer lives are saved.

You can help by taking a few of our flyers and hand them out at school, pin them up at your favorite coffee shop, the community board, at work, at the metro, pass them around in your neighborhood, church, wherever you feel comfortable.

Minimal effort is required on your part, but it has a HUGE impact on us. If we can recruit a new foster home thanks to the flyer you handed out it literally means you have saved a life as it will allow us take another cat from the shelter where it would have faced euthanasia.

Do you know a pet loving store owner that would be willing to add our flyers to their shopping bags? Would you talk to them for us? There are so many ways you can help save a feline live and please know that we’re not asking for a permanent commitment. You decide when you want to help and how much time you want to spend.

We’ll provide & deliver the following flyers:

“Tell your Mother-in-Law the guest room is taken” (to urgently recruit more foster homes)

Upcoming adoption fairs (to alert adopters of our adoption fairs)

Featured cats (to broadcast our “ADORABLES”)

…and if saving a live isn’t enough, just consider that any miles you drive to and from locations where you hand out our flyers might be tax deductible! This is a great volunteer opportunity without stringent time constraints and a wonderful cause.

If you are interested, please contact us at info@fourpaws.org or by phone at 703-715-6369.

The pagoda is now a place of charity for unlucky children and also helps treat diseases. Now, the pagoda is taking care and bringing up more than 200 children in the South of Vietnam. The children here have unfortunate backgrounds as many have been abandoned by their parents and relatives. The head monk sometimes receives phone calls from hospitals requesting him to take in abandoned babies. At the moment, about 200 children are living in the Pagoda, their ages ranging from 5 days old to 40 years old. 90 of these are orphans that are suffering from cerebral-palsy, blindness or Down's syndrome. At present, about 30-40 local children have a chance to study at Ky Quang as some local teachers teach Vietnamese for them in the morning.
Volunteers will spend time with the children and help improving their English, organizing games and other activities for them. The C.A.P.E. League is a comprehensive year-round program created to fully integrate the lives of young people in the DC metro area with a broad education and great opportunities. The strategy for this program is to reach out to youth who are not responsive to other programs or are in special situations, and engage them per their interests in the arts, entertainment, sports, and media – while developing them in a variety of other key areas.

We are looking for wonderful, civic minded individuals to help our children to succeed in school and other areas of education, arts, and language. Join us for a great opportunity to donate time to your community. Students may be eligible for intern and/or community service credit!!!
Some part time work I expected fell through for me and now I am out of the money needed for the food untill a date after the event. I am looking to see if there is anyone who might be interested in donating some basic ingredients for a chili cook-off. Just some basics. Need to cook for 20 people. Stewed tomatoes, beans, rice, anything canned would help. I know it’s a long shot but maybe someone knows someone who can help. I have won chili contests before and I have simply found myself in a bind. Winnings will go to a local horse farm for a dear friend of mine.
