Picked up this Proteus a little while ago. The person who sold it to me, used to work at Proteus Bikes, and it was built for him in 1986 at their College Park, MD shop. Unfortunately, it is a bit too big for me, so I will be passing this beauty and a piece of local history to the next lucky owner. And yes, it is L'Eroica race approved!
The frame measures 57cm top tube and 60cm seat tube, both center-to-center measurements. About 33.5 inches of standover. Headtube is 18cm. So probably for someone in 6'1-6'3 range.
The bike is built with Reynolds 531 tubing, Henry James lugs, Cinelli bottom bracket, and Campagnolo dropouts. It has rear rack mounts. It is rolling on Campagnolo high flange hubs and Weinmann 27inch rims. Specialized armadillo tires 1 and 1/4 inch, about 32mm, and there is room for a lot more! So light gravel riding is not out of the question.
It had a mix of components. I swapped those that didn't match to the all-matching Shimano 600 6207 group. It is a 2x5 setup. The rear mech is a medium/long cage, and it can work with a 13-32T freewheel! I will include a short cage RD that needs a bit of work. I also added build-matching Shimano pedals, flat on one side and SPD clip-in on the other.
The British Racing Green paint is in great shape. Recent cables. Newish matching seat and new Dia Compe rubber hoods, and bar tape. The bike is ready to ride!
Asking $500. Headtube badge stickers generously provided by Proteus Bikes are included!! You can choose which one you like best. I will be staying in both DC and Baltimore areas in February, so I can show the bike in both locales.
