Seeking chefs, culinary instructors, experienced cooks, and other knowledgeable food people to teach individual classes for a DC community group.
Approximately 15 participants (but in the 10-20 range)
Washington, DC — likely Logan Circle
Approximately 90–120 minutes
$250 teaching stipend per session
Approved ingredients and supplies covered separately
Teach one session based on your expertise; no full-season commitment required / expected
I am leading a community group called Practical Kitchen. 28 adults have signed up, and I expect around 15 people at each gathering though class participation will vary.
The goal is to teach practical, transferable kitchen skills — not simply have everyone follow one recipe together. Participants should leave understanding techniques and principles they can apply to many different dishes.
How to Taste and Improve Food
Salt, acid, fat, texture, aroma, balance, and how to identify what a dish needs.
Knife Skills and Mise en Place
Proper grip, safety, knife care, efficient cutting, and organizing a workstation.
Heat, Pans, and Doneness
Choosing the right pan and oil, controlling heat, browning, and recognizing when food is properly cooked.
Building Flavor Without a Recipe
Aromatics, spices, acids, herbs, sauces, texture, and improvising with available ingredients.
Cooking Meat, Fish, and Vegetables Well
Choosing appropriate cooking methods, seasoning properly, using a thermometer, and avoiding dry or overcooked food.
Other Practical Kitchen Skills
I am open to other ideas if the session teaches a useful, transferable skill rather than only one recipe.
I have access to a large private rooftop in Logan Circle with a grill, counters, tables, refrigeration, electricity, and access to an indoor kitchen. Some classes may work well there.
Other sessions may require a teaching kitchen or another suitable space. Please explain what space and equipment your proposed class would require.
Professional restaurant experience is helpful but not required. You might be a:
Chef or former chef
Culinary instructor or culinary-school graduate
Private chef or caterer
Food writer or recipe developer
Butcher, fishmonger, or specialty-food professional
Highly experienced home cook who is comfortable teaching
The most important qualities are:
Knowledge of the subject being taught
Ability to explain the “why,” not only demonstrate the “how”
Comfort teaching beginners
Ability to lead an active group of approximately 15 adults
Ability to design a focused class lasting 90–120 minutes
I will handle participant communications, RSVPs, event coordination, and purchasing approved ingredients and supplies from your list.
Please reply with:
A short description of your background
The topic(s) you would like to teach
A brief description of what participants would learn and do
Your general availability (e.g. are you only available certain days / times of the week?)
Any relevant links, references, or examples of previous teaching
The first session will likely take place in early August. Additional sessions will continue every three to four weeks through December.
