I've been teaching piano for over 20 years and have been on the Board of Directors of the Washington Music Teachers' Association for almost as long. I love teaching all ages, from the very youngest to the very oldest. Most of my students have stayed with me for many years, which I believe is a positive sign of my teaching abilities.
I believe that all students should have a thorough grouding in music theory in order to understand the music they are playing, a well developed technique and a broad range of musical styles. My students learn not only classical music, but also learn the basics of jazz, blues and popular styles as well.
For children: Your child is ready for lessons if he or she can sit still for fifteen minutes. If they can, then they are generally ready. There is no perfect age to begin lessons, but it's always best to start earlier than later. I believe music is something everyone should be exposed to, but I am not a not a teacher for those who insist that their child be playing at Carnegie Hall by age 10. I believe that pushing students too hard has longterm detrimental effects upon everyone. Nonetheless, I hold students to high standards because it isn't worth doing unless you do it well.
For adults: I have many adults who have taken some lessons at an earlier part of their lives. I like to explain that learning music is like learning a language; It takes a long time to become proficient. The more the student is committed to practicing, the faster the progress, of course. But with steady and consistent practice and lessons, progress comes fairly fast.
For all: I like to be flexible and believe it's better to take some lessons rather than none at all. I have some students who cannot afford the time or money for an hour each week, so I am happy to schedule lessons every other week, or half hour lessons. What ever works for you.
Pricing: My rates are a bit on the low end for the good teachers in the area. My fee is $70 per hour for everyone. Why do you need a good teacher if you are just beginning? Because you are learning a skill, and everything you learn is a basis for the future learning. If your foundation is poor, progress is poor and slow. Everyone needs the best instruction from the outset.
Attitude: The best thing any teacher can do is keep the student enthusiastic about their instruction. That is a philosophy that I take dear to heart, because if I kill that enthusiasm, the lessons are not enjoyable for anyone and progress grinds to a halt. If everyone has a good attitude, even the most tone deaf person can make real progress.
Please send me an email, and I'll be happy to schedule a trial lesson. Thank you!
