International Arts & Artists (IA&A), a nonprofit arts service organization based in Washington, DC is seeking an Associate Director of Traveling Exhibitions to work collaboratively with external lenders and art museums to develop and secure bookings of art exhibitions toured by IA&A.
The Associate Director of Traveling Exhibitions manages a portfolio of exhibitions and is responsible for engaging in a high level of external communication to secure exhibition bookings at art museums of varying size and scope across the United States and internationally. The Associate Director initiates and realizes new exhibitions based on the needs and interests of art museums and in alignment with IA&A’s mission to promote cross-cultural understanding through the arts. Additionally, this position provides leadership and administrative support for IA&A’s Traveling Exhibition Service team. Working closely with the Director of the Traveling Exhibition Service, the Associate Director ensures goals and deadlines are met, helps advance projects, and assumes administrative duties including the preparation of exhibition project budgets and contracts.
This position requires curatorial and managerial experience in addition to a strong desire and ability to work collaboratively internally and externally, the ability to initiate contact and develop relationships with a range of stakeholders, a willingness to leverage existing networks, and active engagement in the art museum/visual arts field.
The ideal candidate holds a Master’s degree in Art History or related area of specialization, and has 5-7 years of curatorial experience in an art museum. The candidate has an in-depth understanding of the planning and implementation of exhibitions and is able to manage multiple projects simultaneously. This position requires very strong verbal and written communication skills, a high level of comfort speaking with people on the phone, and excellent attention to detail. The candidate has the ability to work both independently and collaboratively and is forward thinking and enthusiastic in addition to being analytical and a problem-solver. Management experience is required including budget development and tracking, understanding of basic contracts, and ability to help set and attain departmental goals. The ideal candidate must be highly motivated and passionate about the arts.
The Associate Director of Traveling Exhibitions position may be required to work outside of regular work hours including occasional evenings and weekends. This position requires national and international travel 5-10% of the time.
