America’s Harvest Box was a proposal by the Trump administration in 2018, 2019 and 2020 to partially replace EBT benefits with deliveries of “shelf-stable” food such as peanut butter, canned food and pasta.
“The Budget continues the America’s Harvest Box proposal, allowing innovative partnerships with the private sector to combine the traditional SNAP Electronic Benefits Transfer benefits with 100% American grown foods provided directly to households,” the 2019 budget proposal said. “The proposal ensures that Americans in need have access to a nutritious diet while significantly reducing the cost to taxpayers.”
“With our national debt soaring to over $22 trillion, we can no longer kick the can down the road,” Then Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said in a March 11, 2019 statement. “The time to act is now and USDA will actively do its part in reducing federal spending.”
However, despite a potential savings of $129 billion over the course of 10 years, this proposal was never implemented. The EBT TikTok X account shows numerous videos of people buying junk food with EBT benefits, profane tirades when their benefits were interrupted during the government shutdown and dancing after their benefits were restored after the government shutdown. USDA should consider America’s Harvest Box again.
