They left yesterday and will be out next week. The House was originally scheduled to be out this week but moved to next week for King Charles’ visit. That’s not all, they’ll be out the week of Memorial Day too.
Being in DC full time was never the intent but little gets done when they are there. Yesterday Chip Roy said "The American people are wondering what on Earth is happening when they look at this body and see what we fail to do. We're continuing every single day to drive this entire country into bankruptcy...government spying on the people...The response here is 'please let us get on our flights so we can go home' be away for 10 days while this country suffers because this body doesn't do its job."
Originally Congress spent half the year in DC and the other half at home, where many members had full time jobs and/or owned businesses and farms. They returned for special sessions if needed and were paid per diem for each day in session. In the 1700s, the per diem rate was $6 a day which would be about $200 today. They were also paid 20 cents a mile to travel to and from home and DC.
Chip Roy also suggested getting rid of all 435 members of the House and all 100 senators and starting over. The only thing that would make that realistic is going back to being paid per diem. I guarantee at least 90% of them would resign immediately.
