Job Description: Driver – Transportation Services for Individuals with Disabilities
Reports To: Transportation Coordinator / Program Director
Employment Type: Full-Time or Part-Time
Location: Washington, DC
Position Summary
The Driver plays a vital role in supporting the independence and quality of life of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). This position is responsible for the safe, timely, and courteous transportation of clients to and from programs, appointments, and community activities while ensuring their comfort, dignity, and safety at all times.
Key Responsibilities
• Safely transport individuals with disabilities to and from day programs, employment sites, appointments, and community activities.
• Assist passengers entering and exiting the vehicle, ensuring proper use of seatbelts, safety restraints, and mobility devices (wheelchairs, walkers, etc.).
• Maintain a clean, safe, and well-functioning vehicle; report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
• Follow established routes and schedules while remaining flexible to program or client needs.
• Maintain accurate transportation logs, mileage reports, and documentation as required.
• Communicate professionally with staff, clients, and caregivers.
• Provide respectful, compassionate, and person-centered support to all passengers.
• Adhere to all traffic laws, safety regulations, and agency policies and procedures.
• Participate in required training, safety drills, and program meetings.
Qualifications
• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Minimum 2 years of driving experience with a clean driving record.
• Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred but not required; must meet state/federal requirements).
• Experience working with individuals with disabilities preferred.
• Ability to safely operate wheelchair lifts and securement systems (training provided).
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Must pass background check, drug screening, and health/TB clearance as required.
• Current CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

Work Environment
Primarily in transit within the community and at program sites. May require moderate physical effort (assisting passengers, securing equipment). Exposure to various weather conditions while driving or assisting passengers.
