I am seeking help to enhance a talk I gave in 2010 at the Illinois History Symposium and do something more with it by utilizing articles from the foreign immigrant press. I am seeking volunteers to help translate Czech articles from the 1880-1881 Svornost newspaper. I have collected a number of articles which have been translated over time. I found some loose ends and have 11 more articles needing translation, mostly short length. Here is the context:
In the mid 1990s, I gave a talk at the Illinois History Symposium about the legislative initiatives of Chicago's Socialist aldermen from 1878-1885. They held the balance of power and sponsored measure such as the 8 hour work day, child labor laws, factory inspection ordinances, food and drugs laws, and so on.
In 2009 and 2010, as an outgrowth of that talk, I continued the research. Frank Stauber, the primary alderman of this group, had his reelection stolen in April 1880 and the case reached the Illinois Supreme Court. I found the original court files at the trial level and the original City Council documents, as well as the Illinois Supreme Court briefs. Supplementing these sources were the secondary sources of books and newspapers. I gave another talk in March 2010 on this stolen election. I find it an incredible story. I now want to enhance the work and do something more with it.
One of the weaknesses of my talk was that my newspaper coverage was not balanced in that I only quoted the mainstream newspapers of the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Inter Ocean.
But I have now identified and downloaded a 11 more articles relating to this election imbroglio Stauber from the Czech paper Svornost. It seems that articles are in an old form of Czech. Any help, small or large, is greatly appreciated. This is a passion to help tell a story which has never been told. This will get done incrementally.
Thank you very much.
