Comfort is a quality that is undeniably desired during the summer climates. When it’s 90+ degrees out, with very high humidity, having a car with amazing air conditioning grants us the ability to enjoy the summer. A family road-trip without a/c can be brutal!
Since being introduced to the automobile by my father at an early age, a deep passion for the automobile was sparked. Cars led me to my mechanical engineering degree, and a 14-year (and climbing) career as an engineer in product design/development, manufacturing, and quality assurance. I even did a stint in Residential Air Conditioning as a Manufacturing Engineer.
Aside from being able to service car’s engines, I find air conditioning truly fascinating! A car’s a/c system principle is simple:
Low pressure refrigerant is compressed by the COMPRESSOR, turning it into a high-pressure gas, and sent to the CONDENSER. Fast traveling air, along with the CONDENSER FAN(s) cool the refrigerant flowing inside the condenser, turning it into a high-pressure liquid, which then is filtered in the RECEIVER-DRIER. As the refrigerant flows towards the EXPANSION VALVE, the valve reduces the refrigerant pressure, allowing the refrigerant to cool. This cool refrigerant flows through the EVAPORATOR, and the BLOWER MOTOR FAN blows air over the evaporator, which is the cold air that comes out of your vents. Refrigerant flows back towards the compressor where the cycle starts all over again.
Auto a/c systems can range from simple to complex, as often seen on luxury vehicles. The addition of sensors and valves are safety mechanisms, ensuring that the system is functioning with efficiency.
