Antique hawsing iron is in good condition, with a nice patina. A rare piece to find. Used in shipbuilding for caulking seams, especially deck seams. One caulker would stand holding the iron while another would pound it with a mallet known as a beetle. It is made of wrought iron. Overall length is 21". Adjustable axe like head measures 7" in length and 4" in width at the widest point. Weighs 4 pounds. Hawsing iron is still usable, but would make an interesting nautical display piece.
