A strikingly detailed antique cast iron doorstop depicting Mr. Punch, the iconic character from the beloved English Punch and Judy puppet tradition, dating to the Victorian period, circa 1880s or 1890s.
The subject matter depicts the proverbial 16th century stage character “Punch” of “Punch and Judy” notoriety, sitting on a stack of books with his dog Toby by his side. The figure wears his signature jester’s hat with its curved, beaded crest and elaborately detailed costume. The hollow back is typical of English cast iron doorstops of this era. The piece has been repainted black, presenting a uniform graphite-like finish. Measures 12” tall × 9” wide and weighs approximately 6.5 lbs — a satisfyingly substantial piece.
Was bought at a flea market in the U.K. In 1970 and carried in plane home.
