Matte black wood frame side chair with navy blue needlepoint and floral decoration seat. Very sturdy; great condition except for one minor spot on the back of the chair where the paint has worn away (see photo.) Handwritten on the bottom of the chair by the previous owner (a relative who loved collecting) is "Cavalier Hotel, Virginia Beach; bought 1976, chair 1919."
The Cavalier Hotel fully opened in the 1920s and was a major part of Virginia Beach development; it entertained seven US presidents--Coolidge, Hoover, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon. It was temporarily commandeered by the US Navy as a training center during World War II, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. The hotel apparently also has a haunted history; soon after it opened, Adolf Coors (the founder of Coors Beer) was found dead after jumping from the sixth floor. Guests still report hearing unexplainable sounds. Last photo is image of the hotel.
