The Pirate (1948) Dvd Dir. Vincente Minnelli - Judy Garland, Gene Kelly with songs by Cole Porter,
It's a fun-filled and musical case of mistaken identity when lonely Judy Garland mistakes traveling clown Gene Kelly for a famed Caribbean pirate.
Manuela Alva (Judy Garland) is unhappily engaged to Don Pedro (Walter Slezak), the mayor of her town. When a circus arrives, she's enchanted by performer Serafin (Gene Kelly), who's likewise smitten with her. The mayor tries to evict the circus from town, but Serafin turns the tables after realizing Don Pedro is Macoco, an ex-pirate in hiding. When Serafin learns that Manuela dreams of Macoco, he adopts the discarded identity to woo her -- but is then condemned to death for the pirate's crimes.
Garland and Kelly have never been funnier. Though the songs are few, the production numbers are astounding. Garland, of course, sounds incredible and Kelly does at least three long dance numbers that make for wonderful watching. Viewers must remember that the whole movie is a put-on to some degree, and the stars put it over marvelously. Great support, too, from Walter Slezak and Gladys Cooper. This is one of those films that validate the phrase "glorious technicolor." It also adds luster to the memory of the golden age of MGM musicals.
