This is a beautifully hand-carved Korean Hahoe mask depicting "Jung," the apostate monk from the traditional Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori drama. Known for its distinctively expressive features, this mask represents one of the most recognizable characters in Korean folk theater.
Design & Craftsmanship:
• Articulated Jaw: Features a traditional "moving jaw" attached by cord, allowing for dynamic expression during display or performance.
• Material: Carved from a single block of wood (likely Alder or Paulownia) with a rich, polished grain.
• Markings: The reverse side features hand-painted calligraphy identifying the character and the artisan/region.
• Condition: Excellent vintage condition with deep, lustrous patina and original hanging cords attached. A couple small chips on front (see photos)
