This is a fabulous circa 1970s faux bamboo arm chair with original distressed black paint and bold geometric flamestitch upholstery.
The term that comes to mind when I look at this chair is Dissipated Glam. The chair has partied hard over the years and a bit worn around the edges, but it still turns every head when it enters a room.
The armchair is made of heavy solid wood carved with a faux bamboo motif. There are interesting design details throughout, including a central cane panel on the back; fretwork lattice under each arm, and corner braces on the front legs.
The upholstery is a dramatic and bold geometric flamestitch or ikat pattern of black, tan, and beige. The seat cushion is attached, and the back cushion is buttoned to the cane panel.
The chair wears an older coat of black, which has worn, chipped, cracked, and distressed over time. The wear pattern actually seems to echo the staccato pattern of the upholstery fabric.
The chair is unsigned but likely made in the US in the 1970s.
The chair is in good vintage condition. The chair is sturdy and solid at every joint. All fretwork and cane is intact with no missing pieces. The painted finish is worn and chipped. The upholstery is a bit faded but clean with no visible stains. The fabric was torn on one side of the seat but was subsequently mended. The black faux leather piping on the chair seat is worn. Please see photos for more details about condition.
The chair measures 40.5" tall, 25" wide, and 24" deep with a seat height of 20 inches, and an arm height of 26 inches.
