A stunning matched pair of original hand-colored steel engravings by the celebrated Edinburgh engraver William Home Lizars (1788–1859), from Sir William Jardine’s Naturalist’s Library — one of the most distinguished natural history publications of the 19th century.
The two plates depict Trochilus Anais (Blue-bellied Saw-billed Humming-Bird, Plate 2) and Trochilus Buffonii (Buffon’s Humming-Bird, Native of Brazil, Plate 19). Each bird is rendered in rich hand-applied color against a delicately engraved, uncolored botanical background — a signature technique that is considered among the finest miniature nature portraiture ever produced.
Both prints are professionally framed in matching black and gold frames with sage green mats and marbled inner borders. Framed size: 18½” × 16½”.
