I'm Dan, and I have been tutoring math privately from 6th grade through college calculus in Montgomery and Fairfax Counties. I tutor the following subjects: 6th and 7th grade math, Pre-algebra, Algebra I , Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, SAT I Math, ACT Math, GRE Math, and Praxis I Math. I am accepting students from 6th grade and up.
A little about me: I have degrees in Geophysical Sciences, Atmospheric Science plus a Master's in Education. I have been running a tutoring agency, MathSmart Tutoring(www.mathsmarttutoring.com) serving the Washington DC Metro since 1997, and have authored and edited 5 test preparation books including 2 math SAT books.
I love to see a student's self-esteem and confidence soar when he comes home with an "A" on his test or quiz for the first time. I am glad I am making a difference in students' and parents' lives every day, having tutored over 300 students since 1997.
My style of tutoring involves questioning and reasoning, where I lead the students to the correct answer (rather than telling a student how to solve a problem). I have experience tutoring kids with LD's and ADD/ADHD and autism. Kids who have difficulty with concentration, whether from a disability or being tired/bored, learn better when asked questions, and keep better focused. I like to give breaks and just chat several times during the session with ADHD kids. I have a great sense of humor and bond well with kids.

Looking forward to helping your child achieve his academic goals.
Kept her on task
"I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your dedication to my daughter during the past several months. Without your kind and patient attention, she would have fallen to the bottom of the barrel in algebra very quickly, and would never have been able to recover. She worked very well with you, and while I know there were some rough spots, you kept her on task and - most importantly - feeling good about herself that she was able to do those things she never thought she could do. Math is very difficult for her, as you know, and yet I heard you two talking and laughing during your work together and I knew you had the magic touch needed to make her care. I will be delighted to provide references for you for years to come, and I again thank you for being such a gentle and warm person who can work with a 15 year old and not intimidate her, and even gain her confidence. I don't know what she would have done without you!"
"Knowledgeable, patient tutor who is very perceptive in figuring out students' learning styles and identifying what exactly is holding a student back. He figured out an underlying deficiency in my daughters math skills that really helped unlock the reason she hadn't been "getting it!""
"After only a few sessions my daughter is steadily improving in Algebra 2. Very impressed with Dan's level of knowledge and professionalism! The proof is seeing her confidence increase steadily. Looking forward to seeing her become even more confident!"
"Dan quickly assessed the situation and helped my son identify his weak areas. We look forward to working with Dan again. He knows the subject very well and also did a good job relating to my son."
"I had a wonderful time re-learning some of the math basics that I had forgotten over the years (exponent rules, PEMDAS, etc.) He is kind and encouraging. Would recommend! Thanks, Dan!" - Alex
