Living in shared housing needn’t mean being stuck in an 8’x10’ bedroom in a group house with 3 roommates and 1 bathroom. Consider this alternative: your own floor while sharing a home with just one human female housemate and the affections of Lucy, my highly photogenic 5-year old cat.
We live on a tree-lined street of 1950s ramblers between Forest Glen (1.5 miles) and Wheaton (1 mile) Metro stations, offering easy access to downtown DC demonstrations and the Beltway. Not fancy, but homey and welcoming, with nearby parks, convenient shopping, and eclectic local restaurants. Friendly neighbors gather for occasional happy hour parties.
We’re looking for a housemate – ONE ONLY – not just a renter.
Someone compatible, congenial, communicative, and cat-loving.
MUST be FULLY-VACCINATED against COVID and responsible about exposure.
Sorry, no men. Some of my best friends are men; I just don’t want to live with one.
You’ll have the basement bedroom, the largest one in the house, plus a private bath. A semi-private study area means you won’t be stuck in the bedroom if you've been fired or furloughed from your federal job and need to send out resumes. Plus – LOTS OF PRIVACY!! There's a shared family room, washer and dryer, and storage on the lower level as well, but I'm not down there that much so the lower level is largely yours to hang out in when you need to be alone. Lucy does go downstairs and will eventually require you to play with her, so only a real cat lover will be happy. She hopes you'd be willing to feed her sometimes when/if I’m occasionally out of town.
Here's what you'll get if you come live with us:
* furnished bedroom with good morning light; bring your own bed if you wish. Room for other items as well.
* walk-in cedar closet
* semi-private study or storage area
* High-speed wireless internet
* your own bathroom
* shared kitchen with gas stove plus your own small fridge & microwave downstairs
* washer and dryer
* free on-street parking right in front of the house
* separate rear entrance if you'd prefer to use it
* back patio perfect for relaxed weekend morning coffee
* gardening space to share with bunnies and squirrels and the occasional deer.
Note: photos show bedroom as decorated by 2 previous housemates.
It's not a huge house, so I'm looking for ONE PERSON ONLY. No exceptions.
NON-SMOKERS only.
LGBTQI-friendly.
A car is advised.
Flexible start date, as early as November 18th; a December 1st start date is fine.
Let's talk!
$950 rent includes WiFi.
Utilities are extra (your share of gas and electric, currently $99/month).
One month security deposit required.
Month-to-month at-will rental with minimum one calendar month notice for departure.
I'm an unemployed/retired (take your pick) female feminist baby boomer, somewhat bohemian, occasional musician, home a lot during the day. My circle of friends is highly multigenerational, and some of my best housemates were 20-somethings. I host klezmer (Yiddish) music practice sessions some Tuesday evenings with up to 7 people. My previous housemates have all said they enjoyed the music.
Interested? When you reply, tell me about yourself and mention any experience with shared and/or cooperative housing. And with cats. Why do you think we’d be happy living together? What’s your usual daily schedule? What's your financial situation? Why are you looking to move? Do you cook? I’ll be conducting initial phone interviews with women who sound like they'd be a good fit before inviting the best candidates to tour the house in person. I’m fully vaccinated against COVID-19, but being a high-risk patient I still have to be careful about exposure and ask that you respect that. Due to allergies, no strong scented candles, or scented oil diffusers (the latter are dangerous for cats). Again, compatibility counts.
Do you have a neutered, indoor cat of your own? We’ve had 2 experience with housemate cats, one more successful than the other. I know how hard it can be to find a place that would take you with your cat, so am happy to discuss the possibility and whether it sounds like our furry friends would get along.
I've been having some trouble with the craigslist mail relay system not passing on my answers to messages, so if you're comfortable with this please include your email address in your reply. I do respond to all messages. If you see this ad, the room is still available.
