The mission of the National Weather Service (NWS), an agency within the Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is to provide weather, water and climate forecasts and warnings for the United States, its territories, and its adjacent waters and oceans to protect life and property and to enhance the national economy.
The Weather and Climate Infrastructure Services (WCCIS) contract supports the NWS's Central Processing and Information Dissemination portfolios. The contract is managed by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Central Operations (NCO).
WCCIS supports NCO's mission which is to deliver national and global weather, water, climate and space weather guidance, forecasts, warnings and analyses to a broad range of users and partners. These products and services respond to user needs to protect life and property, enhance the nation's economy, and support the nation's growing need for environmental information.
Will be supporting mission-critical systems hosted on physical and virtual servers in an active clustering environment. Job duties include:
Support a data center with petabytes of incoming raw meteorological data
Support Tiers 1-3 support as needed
Support more than 2,000 Virtual Machines and over 200 physical servers
Support virtual machine configuration/administration through VMware
Support a large storage area network through NetApp
Capacity planning, monitoring and troubleshooting
Contribute to one of the most utilized weather reporting systems in the U.S.
Follow organizational change processes and coordinate with team members
Must be willing to work on a 24x7 on-call basis on a rotating schedule with other system administrators.
Available shifts: 3:30 pm - 11:30 pm or 11:30 pm - 7:30 am
6+ years of relevant experience. Must have experience with Linux/Unix system administration. Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) versions 5/6/7. Experience with Citrix NetScaler for load balancing. Must have experience creating, maintaining, and implementing virtual machines (VMs). Experience with Puppet for automation and finding duplicate file versions. Must have experience with network administration (NetApp SAN). Experience working with local system administration using a KVM. Must have good written and verbal communication skills.
SNMP protocol configuration experience
Local Data Manager (LDM) protocol configuration experience
LAN configuration experience
Akamai for web content caching
Big Brother experience for monitoring systems
Familiarity with PostgreSQL / MySQL databases
Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA)
Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident and be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to enter the applicable government facility.
BS in computer science, related discipline, or equivalent.
