My French father-in-law purchased this piece in 1960 while traveling in the African country of Niger. It hung in their French country house for decades. It could also be used as a tabletop. I don't know which tribe this came from or the type of wood used. The carvings include an elephant, two fish, men, serpents and leaves. Also, while this piece appears to be a perfect circle, it actually measures 41" across sideways from the serpent to the elephant and 43" across going up and down from the fish and man to the other fish and man.
