Vintage 1950s Control Line Model Airplane – Rare Engine!
I have owned this airplane since 1959 and used it to learn to fly larger control-line models. Recently recovered and painted --can be flown or used for display. Jim Walker "Firecat" model. Flies very well - comes with 60-foot metal control lines and control handle as pictured.
1948 GLO-TORP 29 GLOW MODEL ENGINE – .29 ci displacement engine - This is one of the FIRST commercially available glow-plug model airplane engines. Previous model planes had spark plugs like automobiles. The aluminum casting batch for this engine was made in 1946 as a “sparker” and was originally to be sold as an ignition-type engine. In 1947, the “glow plug” was invented and took over almost all small model airplane engines very quickly. 1948 was “the Year of the Glow Plug,” per Model Airplane News magazine. Lud Kading fitted the new glow-plugs to his existing 1946 castings and sold the engine as a ‘GLO-TORP 29 “Torpedo” model.’ This engine was only sold from 1948 to 1950 with subsequent Torpedo engines having newer castings starting in 1950. This engine was followed in 1954 with the K&B Torpedo “Green Head” series – one of the most successful lines of model airplane engines ever produced. No collection is complete without this transitional engine.
The engine starts, runs well, and can be flown if desired. Great for decorative display.
