Bike shop vs. department/discount store quality bike. Made in Taiwan (not China).
Ready to ride - just pumped up the tires and lubed the chain and took it for a spin. Smooth.
Frame size is best for teens to smaller adults though I was perfectly comfortable with my 5'10" size.
This is a near classic Trek 800 Antelope set up as a hybrid bicycle with road tires, but with its 4130 Cr-Mo / Cro-Moly steel alloy frame, it would easily handle the demands of mountain biking.
Let us know as we can easily replace the slicks with knobbies.

17 inch Chromium-Molybdenum frame which has a fantastic strength to weight ratio and many cyclists prefer its sleeker look to some of the bumpy modern frames;
Shimano 200GS Derailleur with indexed finger shifters;
Shimano center-pull brakes (with quick release [QR]);
Araya rims (with QR front axle);
Fairly new Michelin 700 x 35c tires;
QR seatpost;
Dimension metal pedals.
The only ding is the saddle has some wear.
