The manufacturer’s mark on the bottom of each piece features "Spode Bone China England QUEENS GATE Y.8052 Reproduction of Spode No 1325 Period 1810.” Classic and beautiful, the gilt on this bright white bone china is exceptionally elegant. The term gilding covers a number of decorative techniques for applying fine gold leaf or powder to solid surfaces to give a thin coating of gold. A gilded object is also described as “gilt."

This rare and beautiful set was purchased new in London, very lightly used and carefully stored for decades in our clean and smoke-free home. Please view all photos, as they are part of the description. The white glare in some photos is due to camera flash and lighting. The brilliant shining gold gilt is hard to photograph, but it exhibits the same color and shiny luster as what is seen in gold jewelry. This bright and spectacular Victorian pattern adds beauty to any table or decorative setting.
Spode was particularly known for the technical achievement of developing a standard formula for the making of bone china — a type of porcelain that is dazzlingly white and so strong it can be used to create very thin translucent plates and vessels. Bone china is much lighter, more translucent and more durable than traditional porcelain. So beautiful, desirable and successful was Spode's bone china, that phrases such as "the inventor of bone china" and "The Original" were consistently in use to market Spode's bone china throughout the 20th century. The translucency of Spode Queens Gate bone china was used for marketing in 1970s, as seen in the last (black and white) photograph.
