Dolls have been a prevalent part of human history since the existence of ancient civilizations. Originally, porcelain china dolls were made to resemble adult women, but, from the 1850s onwards, dolls began to look more like children. The larger doll has a flat top head with a hair parted in the center. Flat top dolls were also known as civil war dolls, and they date from 1860 to the 1870s. Though the larger doll's dress is old, it is not original and dates from the 1910s or 1920s. This may signify that she is a nineteenth-century heirloom, most likely passed down from her original owner to a daughter or granddaughter, and was loved enough to be "modernized" with a newer dress.
